Turns out Sam Altman thinks one bit of Andrew Garfield’s Artificial performance is spot-on
Sam Altman has weighed in on Andrew Garfield’s turn as him in Artificial — and reckons just one element actually hits the mark.
If you thought biopics would let up in 2026, think again. Artificial, the briskly hyped film about Sam Altman and the OpenAI circus, is on the way — and Altman himself has just weighed in on how Andrew Garfield handles playing him. Honestly, if you were expecting hardline accuracy, you might be a touch disappointed. However, in one very specific way, Garfield seems to have nailed it.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Altman remarked: 'I will say from having watched the trailer, I don’t think they’re going for accuracy. Except for the walk.'
Apparently, Garfield’s uncanny take on Altman’s physical quirks is spot on — particularly the walk. Altman mentioned seeing Garfield lingering outside his San Francisco flat during filming, decked out in lookalike gear and a backpack, and described the whole affair as a bit 'really weird', but had to admit the 'quirky mannerisms' were bang on.
For those after a blow-by-blow run-through of OpenAI’s very recent boardroom chaos, you’ll want to manage your expectations. The trailer features Garfield (as Altman) dashing into a bunker with firearms slung along the walls. Altman was quick to clarify the artistic licence there. No actual bunker, no wall-mounted guns. But he had to concede, at least, 'it did look kind of cool.'
From Altman’s perspective, the creative team aren’t fretting about a perfect historical record. His main message: this is a film first, with reality trailing a distant second. Put plainly, 'They’re trying to make a good movie, and maybe it will be good. It will not be good as an accurate depiction.'
The world premiere of Artificial took place at the New York Film Festival on 5 October 2026.
Behind the Fiction
The talent behind Artificial isn’t exactly lightweight. Luca Guadagnino (yes, Call Me By Your Name) directs, with Simon Rich on script duty. The film leans into the OpenAI boardroom saga of late 2023, focusing on Altman’s abrupt exit and whiplash return as CEO just five days later. The story also throws a spotlight on the tension between Altman and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, painting the sort of tech world power struggle that would do well in Hollywood’s current climate.
- Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman
- Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever
- Monica Barbaro as Interim CEO Mira Murati
- Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk
- Also: Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Chris O’Dowd, Cooper Hoffman, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet
Guadagnino is also on production duty, sharing credits with Rich, Jeffrey Clifford, David Heyman, and Jennifer Fox. If you’re wondering how Neon came to have it, that’s because Amazon MGM Studios got squeamish and bailed after shaking hands with OpenAI over a big new partnership. Neon swooped in and picked it up off the table. All in all, very clean timing.
The confirmation for date hawks: Artificial lands in cinemas 25 December 2026, aiming for that contentious Christmas Day spot.
