Tuner box office: what the $7 million safecracking thriller made in cinemas before hitting Paramount+ this week
Black Bear's $7 million thriller opened in four theaters, expanded on reviews rather than marketing spend, and cleared its budget without a single franchise attached. Here's the full theatrical run ahead of its streaming debut.
A crime movie about a piano tuner opened in four theaters in May and never received a conventional wide-release push. It still cleared its production budget, which is more than most films at that price point managed in 2026.
Tuner landed on Paramount+ on Monday, 21 September 2026, closing out a theatrical run that Black Bear Pictures handled as a platform release. It opened in limited release on 22 May 2026 in four locations, taking $104,420 — about 2.3% of everything it would eventually make domestically.
The expansion did the work
Week two is where the strategy paid off. The film jumped to 504 theaters by its third week and posted a second-weekend increase of roughly 1,553%, which is the kind of number only possible when you start from four screens and have reviews to point at. Per The Numbers, the run finished with:
- $4,511,186 domestic — 45.9% of the worldwide total.
- $5,309,138 international — unusually strong for a film this size.
- $9,820,324 worldwide — against a $7 million budget.
- 2.61 legs — the ratio of total gross to opening weekend, well above the 2026 average.
- 3.6 weeks — the average length of run per location.

Trackers don't fully agree on the final tally. The Numbers closes the book at $9.8 million worldwide; Wikipedia's box-office line cites $13.5 million. Either figure puts the film in profit on its theatrical run before streaming money is counted.
Britain carried the overseas half
The international split is the more interesting column. The United Kingdom alone delivered $2,261,952 — half the film's entire domestic gross — followed by Australia at $897,095 and the Netherlands at $776,832. Leo Woodall is British, One Day was a substantial hit there, and the release was timed accordingly.
A $7 million thriller with no IP, no sequel hook and an R rating outgrossing its budget twice over is a rarer result in 2026 than a $200 million tentpole doing the same.
What it bought
Daniel Roher's first narrative feature runs 107 minutes and stars Woodall as Niki White, a piano tuner whose hyperacusis — heightened sensitivity to sound — turns out to be very useful for opening safes. It premiered at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2025 and made TIFF's Canada's Top Ten list for that year.

Reviews were the entire marketing campaign: 94% on Rotten Tomatoes across 191 critics, 75 on Metacritic, and a 93% audience score. The RT consensus credited the film with pairing "a nifty caper setup with smart humor and vivid characterizations."
Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus said the film "announces Leo Woodall as a compelling star talent."
Why it's streaming now
Paramount+ picked up the title for a 21 September debut, roughly four months after the theatrical bow — a standard window for a Black Bear release of this size, and the point at which a platform title stops earning in cinemas anyway. For the record: it took $104,420 across its first three days in release, and $5.3 million from audiences outside North America.
