Tom Hiddleston Teases Avengers: Doomsday Will Shatter Every Expectation
Expectations for Avengers: Doomsday are sky-high — and Tom Hiddleston wants them in orbit.
Seven years after Avengers: Endgame basically shattered the box office (and more than a few expectations), Marvel is teeing up Avengers: Doomsday—and, not to put too fine a point on it, the stakes could not be higher. The last two Avengers movies landed in the stratosphere of all-time highest-grossing films, so, needless to say, there is a mountain of anticipation, hype, and probably a few nervous execs watching how this next one shapes up.
What's the Buzz from the Set?
Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki, chaos magnet extraordinaire. Remember, the last time we saw him (in Loki Season 2), he was basically patching together reality itself—no big deal, right? How or why Loki is popping back into the ensemble this time around, we have no clue, and neither does anyone not working directly for Kevin Feige. If Hiddleston knows, he's not talking.
He did throw fans a bone in an interview with The River:
"All I can tell you is that 'Avengers: Doomsday' is going to be magnificent and will defy all your expectations. It defied mine. When I read the film, I thought, 'This is going to be extraordinary.'"
Hiddleston was also asked which cast member inspired him the most on this one, but—because Marvel is run like a high-security military operation when it comes to spoilers—he completely sidestepped the question. Can't blame the guy.
The Ridiculous (in a Good Way) Cast List
Marvel's definitely not phoning this one in. They've loaded Avengers: Doomsday with basically everybody you'd expect, and a few you probably wouldn't expect in a million years. Here's the breakdown:
- The current front-line MCU heroes, like Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi)
- The full cast from last year's The Fantastic Four: First Steps
- Classic Avengers like Chris Evans back as Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth as Thor
- The wildest card of all: Robert Downey Jr. is returning—but not as Tony Stark. He's actually playing Doctor Doom (which is kind of mind-melting if you're a Marvel trivia nerd)
- Plus, if that wasn't enough nostalgia, the OG Fox X-Men gang is also along for the ride
MCU Is Out to Prove It Still Has It
Real talk: Marvel's had a bumpy ride lately. The golden run where even offbeat movies like Guardians of the Galaxy or Captain Marvel basically printed money is in the rear-view mirror. There have been some wins, but not everything's been a slam dunk. Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* felt a lot more lukewarm compared to earlier phases, and The Marvels...well, that was Marvel's first actual flop.
Even The Fantastic Four: First Steps (which was supposed to be a new shot in the arm for the MCU) didn't quite blow the doors off. That said, it was better than some of the recent misfires. Next up is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31. That one's probably a guaranteed blockbuster just because, well, it's Spider-Man.
Here's hoping that gives Avengers: Doomsday enough momentum to meet (or actually surpass) everyone's wild hopes when it finally lands on December 18, 2026—the fans', the skeptics', and definitely the Marvel shareholders'.
Avengers: Doomsday Cast (in a very big nutshell)
It's a massive, franchise-spanning lineup, including:
- Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), the four from Fantastic Four: First Steps, Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Robert Downey Jr. (Doctor Doom), and the Fox X-Men cast.
Mark your calendars—Marvel's swinging for the fences with this one.
