Tom Hiddleston’s Loki promise is exactly what Avengers: Doomsday fans needed to hear

Marvel can’t keep Loki out of the game—even when he’s had, what, three different ‘final’ send-offs? If you’ve been following the Disney+ series, you probably wondered how they'd manage bringing Tom Hiddleston back for Avengers: Doomsday without trampling all over the ending that wrapped up Loki Season 2. Turns out, Hiddleston himself has clocked the concern—and his latest update is actually pretty reassuring for once.

Loki’s Not Getting Rebooted. Promise.

Hiddleston’s comments come just as Marvel fans are gearing up for whatever chaos Avengers: Doomsday brings. Naturally, a few people were worried Marvel might press the big red 'reset' button and undo all the character development Loki went through in his solo series. You can relax. According to the man behind the mischief, Loki’s journey isn’t being wiped out just to shoehorn him back into the movies.

Here’s how Hiddleston put it, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his new National Geographic docudrama:

'Loki felt like a closure. And when Marvel called about Avengers: Doomsday, it was going to be starting from that end point. So there was no sense of unstitching or undoing all of that development. That development still stands as a place to begin.'

Translation: they’re not taking the easy way out by erasing all the progress. Loki is still the multiverse’s slightly reluctant guardian, as established at the emotional peak of Season 2.

Which Loki Are We Actually Getting?

If you’ve lost track (fair enough—who hasn’t?), this is still that version of Loki, the one who split off in the middle of Avengers: Endgame after swiping the Tesseract in the time heist. The original Loki (the one who got on Thanos’s bad side at the start of Infinity War) is still presumed very much dead. Hiddleston’s been playing the alternate-branch Loki ever since—two seasons of the Disney+ show later, and the character now stands as the cosmic overseer keeping everything from falling apart. That’s where Doomsday will pick up.

Fun Detail: Loki’s Latin Homework Leads to TV Archaeology

In a bit of a universe crossover no one expected, Hiddleston picked up some Latin while filming a Loki episode set in Pompeii. Apparently, that left such an impression that he’s now executive producing a Nat Geo mini-series about the actual Pompeii disaster, called Pompeii: Out of Time, alongside his usual Loki collaborator Kevin R. Wright. Odd what sticks with you at work, isn’t it?
