'The rumors are true. And do you want this?' — what Tom Cruise asks people before they work with him

Everyone's heard the Tom Cruise stories. Some are flattering, some a little wild, but nearly all agree on this: Tom Cruise does things at full throttle, whether you love him or not. In fact, he’s just been candid about the whole thing for a new GQ interview while out promoting Digger, and it’s as you’d expect: passionate, a little relentless, and pure Tom Cruise.

The Only Way is Cinema

Here’s something Cruise has made pretty clear: TV and streaming? Not really for him. In a recent chat flagged by Variety, he set out why his heart’s firmly with cinema, not the small screen. He’s not slating TV or Netflix – far from it, he says it’s all fine and dandy, great for jobs and so on – but there’s a reason Tom Cruise isn’t scheduling a Netflix drama any time soon. In his words at the GQ profile, he wants that communal feeling, that experience of strangers in a darkened room, all watching together. And, sure, it’s the part where working with him can be a bit of a ‘strap in and hang on’ vibe.

Explaining his reputation, Cruise described his hands-on, go-all-in approach to the point you can basically hear the Mission: Impossible theme in the background just reading it. Before you turn up expecting a doss about, he makes sure everyone knows what they're getting into:

He goes on – if you’ve ever assumed Cruise leads by sheer willpower, you’re not mistaken. He points out he’s not disorganised, there’s always a plan, always scripts. But the intensity? That’s as much part of the process as the schedule. He even laughs about how, since he was a kid, people thought he was ‘so intense’. Some things just don’t change.

Glen Powell spilled the beans back in 2024: Cruise once handed him a six-hour video breaking down pretty much everything about making movies, from the technical to the artful. We’re not talking Hollywood home movies, either – detailed stuff, lenses, framing, storytelling structure, all the rest. Cruise addressed this in his interview, saying the video was just a basic tool for young actors to grasp how film actually works. In typical fashion, he’s turned even this into a learning moment:

As Cruise explained to GQ about the video: 'It was just very basic. It was something to have people understand, just to have a different concept of lenses and what the lens is and what the frame is. Just the same way as an actor onstage, or in the development of cinema, where it started, and what that frame means and how to understand that frame. There’s just different layers of storytelling, of structure, but also: to understand certain things so that you can forget about it.'
