Tired of this yet? Another Mindy Kaling series cancellation — this time from Hulu
Hulu has axed Mindy Kaling’s single-camera comedy, declining a second season and adding to her run of cancellations.
If you were holding out for a second round of Not Suitable for Work, tough luck — Hulu has decided they're done after just one series. This comes less than four months after the show landed its nine-episode debut in June 2025. Mindy Kaling fans might be feeling a bit of déjà vu here, for reasons that soon become pretty obvious.
Not Suitable for Work was cancelled by Hulu less than four months after its series premiere in June 2025.
Plot, Cast, and Where It All Went
The premise is nothing you haven't seen before, but it had its own brand of Kaling-style workplace awkwardness: a gang of twenty-somethings head into Murray Hill, Manhattan, fixated on career climbing and (occasionally) chasing happiness. Ella Hunt drives things as AJ, a Boston-bred investment banker making the jump to New York for a job. Her housemate Abby (Avantika) is itching for fashion world stardom, which, if you've spent time in Manhattan, is about as risky a gamble as trusting the Central Line during a rainstorm.
On the other side of the corridor, you get three blokes making up the rest of the sitcom chessboard:
- Will Angus as Davis, AJ's workmate and hopeless crush-holder
- Jack Martin as Josh, playing the family-connected journalist who always seems to land on his feet
- Nicholas Duvernay as Kel, an actor who did a runner from medical school
Jay Ellis pops up in the supporting cast as well. The whole thing came out of Kaling International (yep, her own production arm, under an overall Warner Bros. deal), with Charlie Grandy showrunning and Howard Klein chipping in as executive producer.
The Kaling Cancellation Cycle
The end of Not Suitable for Work isn't exactly new territory for Mindy Kaling. Her recent TV ventures have been racking up cancellations like it's a hobby. Earlier this year, The Sex Lives of College Girls got the boot at HBO Max after three series. In 2024, Velma (which she produced and voiced) also said goodbye at Max after two runs. Rewind a bit further and you'll find Champions, which only squeezed out one series at NBC back in 2018.
This latest one probably stings more than most for her: Not Suitable for Work marked the first show she'd created solo since The Mindy Project. If you remember, that show got dropped by Fox in 2015, only to be rescued by Hulu for a proper six-series send-off. No sign of a repeat miracle here. Warner Bros. TV are still holding onto the rights and will start shopping it around in the hopes someone else fancies a turn.
As for whether another platform will actually rescue it — your guess is as good as mine.
