The It Follows sequel has finished shooting — set ten years on, with Mitchell and his whole crew back

Not to get your hopes up (well, maybe a little), but there is actually some movement at long last on They Follow, the long-discussed sequel to David Robert Mitchell's cult horror darling It Follows. That’s right, after over a decade of radio silence and online theories, this thing isn’t just a rumour anymore. The cameras have stopped rolling, so for once, fans aren’t just having to subsist on cryptic teases or Instagram whispers.

Filming on They Follow fully finished this month, capping off principal photography that started back in July 2026.

Back for More Nightmares

All the really crucial stuff is being kept absurdly secret, mind you. We know Maika Monroe is back as Jay Height, haunted survivor and officially the unluckiest woman in horror. The film is set a full ten years after the events of the first one—which, if you recall, debuted in 2014 and then snowballed into a streaming sensation two years after. As for what’s actually happening a decade later, nobody’s revealing anything besides euphemisms like 'psychological horror' and hints that it’ll focus more on the lasting mental rubble than overt monster stuff.

Mitchell himself is writing and directing again. He’s brought most of his behind-the-camera dream team too—cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, editor Julio C. Perez IV, and composer Disasterpeace all return. That’s good news for anyone who loved the chilly dread and 80s synth vibes last time round.

The Gang (Mostly) Returns

Some actual casting news that isn’t vague: Keir Gilchrist is also returning as Paul, in case you worried this would be one of those sequels where everyone disappears apart from the monster. On the new faces front, there’s a pretty stacked lineup: Naomi Ackie, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Gandolfini, Anna Mirodin, Jayne Taini, Tom Pecinka, Melora Walters, Ben Krieger, Natalie Shinnick, Jan Hoag, and Justine Lupe. Neon is handling both producing and US distribution duties, so you can expect a proper indie-horror rollout, stateside at least.

Yes, they’re being cagey with production stills, and there hasn’t been a hint of a plot leak—just the odd Instagram post, really, and a rare podcast appearance from Monroe, who’s promised this new script is “bigger, darker, more intense”. If you were expecting a straight retread, it sounds like even Mitchell’s not up for that—he’s reportedly making this one “more grounded” and shutting the door on jump-scare retreads.

No word yet on an actual release date, not even a year, so don’t sit staring at the calendar just yet.
