The X-Files Reboot Levels Up as Ryan Coogler Adds Weapons and The Big Lebowski Stars
Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot just supercharged its lineup with eight new cast members, including an Academy Award winner from Weapons and a Big Lebowski standout.
Fox Mulder and Dana Scully might not be hunting for little green men this time around—at least not yet—but Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot is loading up on talent like it’s prepping for prime time in the weirdest corner of Hulu’s sci-fi universe. It’s starting to look less like a gamble and more like a can't-miss event for anyone with a soft spot for legendary monsters or, honestly, just good casting.
Who's Who in the New X-Files
In case you’d missed the first round: Himesh Patel (you saw him in Tenet, don’t lie) and Danielle Deadwyler (Carry-On, Till) are leading the new series as the FBI agents trying to make sense of the world’s freakiest mysteries.
But today’s news? The rest of the cast is finally (sort of) out of the bag, and it’s stacked with actors you actually want to see on your screen:
- Amy Madigan: Fresh off an Oscar win (Best Supporting Actress for Weapons—yeah, that horror flick), she’s turning up for an episode. She’s got a Weapons prequel and Netflix’s All the Sinners Bleed coming, but sure, why not squeeze in The X-Files? Clearly not afraid of typecasting as 'creepy but also cool older woman'.
- Steve Buscemi: The guy from Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and if you haven’t witnessed Boardwalk Empire, I don’t know what you’ve been doing. Buscemi is signing on for a guest role, which could mean literally anything—alien, bureaucrat, or just a guy with wild eyes. Your guess is as good as mine.
- Ben Foster: That brooding dude from Hell or High Water (and also starring with Sydney Sweeney in Christy) is showing up for an episode. As always with Foster, expect maximum intensity.
- Devery Jacobs: Standout from Reservation Dogs, and a two-time Critics’ Choice nominee. Another one who’s bound to bring some depth (or at least a sharp joke) to the freak-of-the-week formula.
- Lochlyn Munro: Absolutely everywhere lately—if you missed him in the Scary Movie franchise (he’s coming back for the new one), you’ve at least seen his face somewhere.
- Tantoo Cardinal: If you saw Killers of the Flower Moon, you know her work. One of the underrated greats, lending some serious credibility.
- Joel D. Montgrand: You saw him in True Detective: Night Country. He’s in.
- Sofia Grace Clifton: New kid on the block—she impressed in People of the West. If you didn’t recognize her, you will soon.
But Who's Playing What?
As for who these actors are actually playing? Complete mystery. Nobody’s talking, and honestly, they could be aliens, shady government types, or ‘this week’s cryptid’—The X-Files loves to obscure the details. With names this big in guest-star slots, my bet is a mix of memorable weirdos and potential monsters-of-the-week.
Who's in Charge (And Why You Should Care)
Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) is running the show as showrunner, with Coogler not just writing the pilot, but directing and producing too. The original X-Files creator Chris Carter is still hanging around as executive producer, keeping the DNA intact.
There’s a lot still being kept under wraps, but if you’re worried this new run will disrespect the original, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have both weighed in—and they’re giving it a nod. Duchovny actually said, 'There have been talks' (in classic cryptic X-Files fashion). But it’s Anderson who put it best:
'Yeah, we’ve had a few conversations. He’s such a cool guy and so talented, and the pilot script is really good. I’d say have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s going to be f--ing cool. And it’s something different. It’s not, you know, it’s different and it’s special. So give it a shot.'
If something genuinely surprises Gillian Anderson, that’s probably worth paying attention to.
What’s Next?
Still waiting on official word about character details, more returning cast, and—for people who just want to mark their calendars—an actual premiere date. But with a cast list like this, the X-Files reboot is shaping up to be a proper event. Stay tuned for more weirdness.
