The Wrecking Crew lost the critics and pulled 2.95 billion viewing minutes anyway

Here we are in 2026, and somehow, The Wrecking Crew – that big, silly action flick starring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa – is still one of the hottest things on streaming. I know, we get new movies and series dropped onto Prime Video every other week, but this particular two-hour brawl-and-banter extravaganza refuses to quit.

The Wrecking Crew racked up 2.95 billion streaming views between December 2025 and June 2026, according to Nielsen.

Still Breaking Records

The film landed on Prime Video back on 28 January. Since then, the numbers have been honestly absurd. Right after release, it shot straight to number one and stayed lodged in the streamer’s Top 10 for months. Nielsen's recent analysis had it sitting at a whopping 2.95 billion views from late December 2025 through to the end of June 2026 – not bad at all. For context, that puts it fourth among the most-watched general audience movies on any streaming service this year.

And it’s not done yet. Even as recently as August, Amazon’s global Top 10 list had it in seventh place, right between Alan Ritchson and Kevin James teaming up in Playdate (number six) and some international thing called Beast Wars at eight. Apparently, everyone wants a bit more Bautista and Momoa smashing things.

A Barmy Genre Mash-up

The set-up isn’t complicated: Bautista and Momoa are half-brothers who, after their father's mysterious death, get themselves into increasingly ridiculous situations trying to work out whodunnit. It’s an R-rated blend of action and quips, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (whose last outing was Blue Beetle) and written by Jonathan Tropper (the Star Wars: Starfighter chap). It’s exactly what you’d expect from those two, for better or for worse.

The cast is stacked, too, with Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin popping up throughout. If you’re after subtlety, I’d look elsewhere, but if you want big blokes in big set-pieces, you’re golden.

Not for Everyone – But That Hasn’t Mattered

Now, critics never quite made their minds up. On Rotten Tomatoes, The Wrecking Crew holds a 74% Certified Fresh score – so pretty decent, by today’s standards – but viewers are a bit less enthusiastic, sticking it around 66%. Reviews have been all over the shop, called everything from 'fun, fast-paced buddy-action experience' to 'cliché and cheesy'. If you ask me, that last part’s more or less the point.

The Sequel Question

With streaming numbers like these, you’d expect Amazon MGM Studios to green-light a follow-up yesterday, but as of now, there’s no official word on The Wrecking Crew 2. The creative team – Soto, Tropper, and the two leads – have all said they’re well up for it. In fact, the director told Variety earlier this year that:

'Everyone wants to make it happen. We left a lot of open-ended moments on purpose so we can solve them with a sequel.'

So, while nothing’s set in stone, most of the cast and crew are just waiting for Amazon to give the word. Until then, the original still dominates your recommendations panel, whether you like it or not.
