The Way Home ended on 21 June 2026 with a 90-minute series finale, "Ahead by a Century", closing Hallmark's time-travel drama after four seasons.

The two short answers first: yes, Elliot survives — and Casey Goodwin is Jacob and Abby's child from the future.

Did Elliot make it?

The penultimate episode left Elliot (Evan Williams) shot by his own mother, Tessa, in 1925 amid the chaos of the Lingermore explosion. The finale resolved it quickly: Kat dragged him to the pond just in time, Alice and Jacob carried him the rest of the way home, and he pulled through. Then he finally proposed — a makeshift fairy-tale proposal, with Alice playing her song "Already Home" in the background — and Kat said yes.

It could have gone much darker. Speculating on a version of the show that got a fifth season, Williams told Variety in June 2026:

"They would have ended season 4 with the audience thinking that Elliot was dead."

Who is Casey, really?

Casey Goodwin (Vaughan Murrae) is Jacob and Abby's child, visiting from the future. The surname was cover — arriving in Port Haven as a Landry would have given the whole game away, so Casey borrowed Abby's name instead.

The reveal also tells you something lovely about the future: in Casey's era, the pond is no longer a guarded secret but open family lore, passed down the way Fern was raised on it. The finale even traced how the family ring found its way into Casey's possession.

Every other loose end

  • Cliff and Fern — Cliff died in the 1926 New Year's Eve explosion. Fern was pregnant, and a one-day jump back gave her the chance to tell him he'd be a father before the end. Their child grows up to be Kat's grandfather.
  • Jacob and Abby — married at the pond, with faces from every era present as figments. The wedding finally reunites Port Haven's founding families.
  • Del — one last dance with Colton in 1999 gave her the closure she needed to move forward with Sam.
  • Evelyn — knew Alice was a time traveller all along, and turned out to be the one who edited the old film reel.

Why did the show end?

Hallmark confirmed in November 2025 that season 4 would be the last — a planned farewell rather than a shock cancellation, which is why the finale answers so much. With the first three seasons streaming on Netflix and pulling in a far bigger global audience than cable ever did, fans are already campaigning for someone to pick the story back up.
