The top three movies on Netflix in 2026 are the last ones you’d guess
Netflix just dropped its latest What We Watched report for the first half of 2026, and the top three movies aren’t the usual suspects. Fresh global viewing data shows a couple of surprise breakouts muscling past expected blockbusters to top the streamer’s charts.
Bit of a shake-up in the Netflix stats this time around. The streamer has just dropped its What We Watched figures covering the first six months of 2026, and there are some chart-toppers here that I don’t think anyone had money on back in January.
First off, Netflix clocked up a staggering 97 billion hours of viewing worldwide in that half-year window. That’s a silly amount of people on the sofa, let’s be honest. But here’s where things get interesting: the films and series actually pulling in the biggest numbers aren’t always from the franchises you’d expect.
War Machine Takes the Crown
The title of Netflix’s biggest film so far in 2026 goes to War Machine, which racked up an eye-watering 146.9 million views — comfortably ahead of the rest. Not to be confused with any Marvel property: this one’s a full-blown sci-fi action romp with Alan Ritchson at the helm, directed by Patrick Hughes (the bloke who did The Hitman’s Bodyguard).
Plot-wise, it’s military recruits getting chucked into what’s supposed to be an elite training session, only for it to go spectacularly sideways when something nasty and unidentified shows up. Think explosions, tactical nonsense, and more running-in-slow-motion than you’re supposed to find in one film. Clearly, this combo has worked — Netflix has already put out the word that a sequel’s underway. No point hanging about when people are actually watching your movies.
Surprise Hits Round Out the Chart
- War Machine – 146.9 million views
- The Rip – Second place, exact numbers are a mystery but still beating everything else except for the winner.
- Swapped – Snagged third-place bragging rights.
If you thought the usual tentpoles would dominate, apparently not this time round. The Rip and Swapped, which might’ve flown under your radar, managed to elbow aside whatever else Netflix had out there, at least by their internal scoring.
TV Chart: Drama and Murder Outsell Bridgerton, Somehow
On the telly side, the breakout victor is His & Hers, which clocked up 104 million views — even outpacing Bridgerton season 4 (which still pulled a very healthy 100.2 million). So, for once, drama and murder outdrew period costume and orchestral pop covers.
His & Hers is one of those twisty British thrillers adapted from Alice Feeney’s book, and the cast is no joke: Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson play estranged spouses who wind up investigating the same small-town murder in their own messy, combative ways — he’s a detective, she’s a journalist. The whole thing is layered with personal history, unreliable narration, and the sort of psychological tension that supposedly had viewers absolutely hooked. Frankly, it’s no surprise it’s popped off worldwide; Netflix couldn’t make more ‘complicated marriage, murder, secrets’ content if they tried.
Elsewhere on the viewing leaderboard: I Will Find You, Stranger Things 5, and Run Away rounded out the top five. So the TV audience is still keen for a mix of thrillers, nostalgia sci-fi, and whatever category Run Away fits into. Make of that what you will.
