The Rookie quietly shot a series finale in case ABC pulls the plug
On a new podcast, the leads discussed the show’s staying power — and hinted the original Season 8 finale plan would’ve sent things in a very different direction.
Let’s catch up on The Rookie – which, if you can believe it, is now officially rolling into its ninth season over on ABC. Not bad for a procedural that essentially kicked off as a next-step gig for Nathan Fillion after he finished up on Castle back in 2016. The network clearly wanted to hang onto Fillion – can you really blame them? – and plugged him straight into this fresh LAPD drama in 2018.
Eric Winter, who plays Tim Bradford, told People about the season’s ambiguous ending: 'We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back. Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time. We even shot an alternate ending to the show. It would’ve been different. I’m very happy that we get to come back [for season 9]'
New Season, Same Drama
If you’re caught up, you’ll know the latest run signed off with a proper cliffhanger. After surviving a hair-raising mission, Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil) finally get some time alone. Cue proposal on a windswept beach – and then, mid-moment, masked men rock up from nowhere and kidnap both of them. The credits hit with both fan favourites carted off by strangers. Not exactly what you hope for on your day off.
The bit you might not know: the producers actually filmed a second, alternate ending, just to be safe in case ABC suddenly pulled the plug and the show didn’t get a renewal. Apparently, this alternate take would’ve provided some actual closure, rather than leaving Tim and Lucy’s fate dangling in the wind. It’s a refreshingly considerate move – let’s be honest, some network procedurals (yes, Hannibal, looking at you) have a knack for ending on a heart-stopping cliffhanger, then getting the axe, leaving everyone frustrated. For once, they planned ahead.
As Melissa O'Neil explained to People: 'We’re so grateful to the fans of the show. They’ve helped get us to where we are. The reason they keep watching—and new people keep joining all the time—is why we’ve made it to season 9. Hopefully, we’ll get to tell the story for even longer. We have a lot of love for the fans, and we’re so grateful for their enthusiasm.'
Why The Rookie Still Lands
It says a lot that nine seasons in, The Rookie is still looking after its audience. The cast are pretty upfront about how important the support means – not just for keeping the lights on, but for making sure they don’t just coast but keep giving fans the payoffs and stories they’ve stuck around for. O'Neil, for example, even highlights that as long as viewers keep watching, she reckons there’ll always be another chapter the writers can spin out.

Still, it’ll be business as usual for now, cliffhangers and all.
