Christopher Nolan just shot down the internet’s favorite rumor: The Odyssey isn’t his priciest movie. Despite the buzz, the epic doesn’t top his budget list after all.

Right, so Christopher Nolan is back at it and this time he’s tackled something massive by even his own standards – a big screen retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey. Now, before the thing has even landed at the cinema, there’s been a tonne of chatter about its budget. Some wild numbers have been floating about, with everyone convinced Nolan had finally tipped into the truly absurd when it comes to spending studio cash. Turns out, that’s not actually the case – and Nolan himself has decided to clear up the mess.

The Real Story Behind The Odyssey Budget

So, all those stories claiming The Odyssey was Nolan’s most expensive film ever? Not true. In a new interview with The Telegraph, Nolan put his foot down and said his Batman blowout, The Dark Knight Rises, still holds the title for his priciest project. As for The Odyssey, yes, the budget is still jaw-dropping – current talk puts it at about $250 million, which is hardly small potatoes. But if you’d been expecting some silly, record-breaking figure, it’s business as usual for someone who works on this scale.

While he was setting the record straight, Nolan also shut down another rumour that popped up before the film even started shooting. The details were apparently so “wild” they got their own mention, but Nolan said they were nonsense. No specifics were revealed, so we’re left to wonder, but at least we know not every rumour about this guy’s productions is worth believing.

R-Rated and Ready for Business

The Odyssey will carry an official R rating, just like Nolan’s last film, Oppenheimer. That film, you might recall, went on to become the third biggest R-rated box office hit in history. Normally, R ratings are supposed to put a dent in ticket sales, but with Nolan, I suppose there’s no such thing as “normal.” Add in the changing tastes of audiences (see: Deadpool & Wolverine) and the early box office tracking, which is actually ahead of where Oppenheimer started, and it honestly looks like this one’s going to clean up, rating or not.

The Details You’ll Want

Nolan wrote and directed The Odyssey, and as usual, he produced it with Emma Thomas via their Syncopy banner. They’ve also brought in Thomas Hayslip as executive producer. If you’re keen to see it for yourself, The Odyssey arrives in UK cinemas on 17 July 2026.
