The Night Manager season 2 ending explained, from the doctored tape to that final shot in the forest
A full decade after Jonathan Pine brought down Richard Roper, The Night Manager returned — six episodes concluding on 1 February 2026 on BBC One — and promptly revealed that Roper (Hugh Laurie) hadn't died in Syria at all.
Tom Hiddleston's Pine, now living quietly as low-level MI6 officer Alex Goodwin, gets dragged back in.
It does not end well for the good guys. Here's the finale, piece by piece.
The doctored tape
The finale's centrepiece is a con built on audio. Roper's son Teddy (Diego Calva) delivers Pine to the forest camp of the Cabreras — the armed clan Roper is supplying for a Colombian coup — as a fake hostage. Once there, Teddy plays them a doctored recording: spliced-together fragments of Roper's real conversations, including one with Pine, edited to sound as though Roper planned to betray the Cabreras, hand them to special forces, and return to England a hero.
The Cabreras believe it. Pine takes a brutal beating to sell the lie, and a trap is set for Roper's arrival.
The forest bloodbath
It unravels fast. When Roper reaches the camp, Teddy's attempt to finish him fails — and Roper shoots his own son dead without hesitation. In the chaos, Cabrera is killed by a marksman's shot from one of Pine's allies, and Pine flees into the trees. Roper's bullet catches his arm; a local ally stays behind and sacrifices himself so Pine can escape.
Meanwhile, the other operation collapses too. Sally Price-Jones (Hayley Squires) and Supreme Court judge Consuelo Arbenz are waiting to seize Roper's weapons shipment — but Roper has switched the planes. The arms land, and the coup rolls forward.
Is Angela Burr dead?
She is — and it's the season's coldest blow. Angela (Olivia Colman) phones a contact at MI6 with her theory that the conspiracy runs far beyond Roper, steps outside, and is shot dead by an assassin. Her body is found by her daughter.
That final shot in the forest
The last we see of Pine, he's wounded, alone among the trees, and collapsing under the weight of total failure — a mirror image of the man who won so cleanly in 2016. Roper strolls around a new Oxfordshire estate with his son Danny, musing about getting dogs, while the radio reports civil war breaking out in Colombia.
One consolation: season 3 is already confirmed, so the story isn't over. And there was nearly more — creator David Farr told Digital Spy in 2026 that a scene between Roper and Roxana (Camila Morrone) originally revealed extra plot, but was trimmed:
"In the end, we chose not to put that part of the scene in," Farr explained, saying it risked giving the game away too early.
The villain won the season. The rematch is coming.
