The Gentlemen returns on September 3, which leaves one day to redo season 1

Brace yourselves, Guy Ritchie fans – the sharp-tongued, bullet-sprayed universe of The Gentlemen is about to resume its binge-worthy chaos. After an absolutely mammoth wait that’s felt roughly as long as a country weekend with Ritchie’s more psychotic characters, The Gentlemen is at last rolling back up for Season 2. If you’re into posh blokes getting mixed up in the very un-posh business of drugs, this is absolutely your beat.

Tacked onto the front of all this is the ever-versatile Theo James as Eddie Horniman, landed gentry by birth, accidental kingpin by narrative necessity. You remember the set-up: Eddie, a bloke who’d rather be reading the Financial Times in his slippers, suddenly gets lumped with his late dad’s estate – and the minor technicality that said estate is actually a cornerstone of the criminal drugs trade. Gutted.

What’s changing in Season 2?

First thing – we’re picking up a year after Season 1 left off, which, yes, has been an absolutely glacial wait in streaming terms. Eddie and the devilishly sharp Susie Glass (that’s Kaya Scodelario for the uninitiated) are now busy getting entangled with Bobby’s overseas empire. Don’t expect a gentle easing-in: Ritchie and his writers tend to prefer throwing the audience straight back into the lion’s den, cocktail in hand.

Fans of all that delicious Ritchie chaos will be after two things: the jet-black laughs (Season 1’s infamous chicken suit moment is still echoing around the internet), and the ever-intensifying criminal fallout. Season 2 is promising exactly that, and frankly, expectations are stacked pretty bloody high after the first run.

Cast and standouts

Alongside James and Scodelario, we’ve got Vinnie Jones (has any Ritchie project ever felt complete without him?) and Giancarlo Esposito, who is basically the closest thing prestige TV has to a certified villain guarantee. The casting keeps this firmly on ‘must-watch’ lists, as most of them could stare down a Rottweiler without blinking. The writing hooks you, the performances keep you planted – which is handy, given Season 2 drops all eight episodes at once. Time to clear the calendar.
