Ted Lasso season 5 already scores big before season 4 kicks off
Ted Lasso fans just scored big: Apple TV head of programming Matt Cherniss says Season 5 is looking promising — and the news drops before Season 4 even hits play.
If you thought the Ted Lasso hype train might be slowing down, brace yourself, because there’s even more on the way—at least, if Apple TV’s top brass are to be believed.
Apple’s Big Tease: Ted Lasso Season 5 Is in the Works (Sort Of)
Matt Cherniss, who runs programming over at Apple TV, has dropped what he clearly thinks is juicy news: Jason Sudeikis is already plotting out Season 5 of Ted Lasso. Not writing it, not shooting it, mind you—just getting his ducks in a row, apparently. Cherniss told Deadline, and I’m paraphrasing for clarity here:
'Jason's still heads-down on season four, and as far as I know, he’s looking to dive into the next season soon. That said, nothing’s actually started on it yet.'
So, producers are buzzing, ideas are brewing, but nobody’s actually gotten the green light for Season 5—officially. Even so, you’d have to be properly pessimistic to bet against it with the momentum this show’s got.
Apple TV's Comedy Swagger
Cherniss seems rather chuffed about Apple TV’s comedy reputation these days. To him, they’ve got the best comedy brand on telly, rolling from Shrinking and Widow’s Bay, through to Ted Lasso, and soon The Studio. His words:
'We feel really, really confident about our slate, and the shows, and we’re excited that the audience is coming along for the ride.'
It's bordering on smug, but, fair’s fair, you can see where he's coming from when something like Ted Lasso is bringing in droves of viewers (and 61 Emmy nominations, if you’re counting).
What’s the Deal with Season 4?
- Premiere Date: 5th August, Apple TV
- Plot Twist: Ted’s now coaching a women’s football team in Richmond (second division, not the Premier League—don’t get carried away)
- Returning Favourites: Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift
- New Faces: Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes (most as members of the women’s squad)
Looking Ahead: Three-Season Story Arc?
If—and it’s a significant if—Season 5 gets picked up, word is it’ll carry on with the women’s team, potentially forming its own three-season arc. The show’s first three outings followed the men’s AFC Richmond side all the way through a contained storyline, so there’s precedent for mapping things out well in advance.
