Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim Lead Disney’s Tangled Remake
Disney’s live-action Tangled has found its stars in Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim, with Michael Gracey directing and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson penning the script. The villain role remains uncast.
Disney’s animated classic Tangled is next in line for a live-action reimagining, and the casting news is now official. Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim have been tapped to take on the central roles, stepping into the shoes of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider. Croft, best known for her work in Titans and the Australian feature True Spirit, will portray the long-haired princess locked away in a tower. Manheim, who has made a name for himself in the Zombies franchise and School Spirits, is set to play the charming thief who helps her break free.
In the original 2010 film, Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi lent their voices to the beloved characters. This time, Croft and Manheim will bring them to life on screen. There had been whispers about Scarlett Johansson circling the part of Mother Gothel, the story’s infamous antagonist with a penchant for dramatic musical numbers—particularly the memorable
‘Mother Knows Best’
. However, Johansson will not be joining the cast, and the search for the right actor to fill Gothel’s shoes continues.
Behind the Scenes: Director and Script
Michael Gracey, who previously helmed The Greatest Showman, is set to direct the adaptation. The screenplay comes courtesy of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, though details about how the new version will differ from its animated predecessor are being kept under wraps for now. The project faced a brief hiatus after Disney’s live-action Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, struggled at the box office. Despite this setback, Tangled is back on track, with the creative team pressing ahead.
While the plot specifics remain a closely guarded secret, the core of the story is expected to follow Rapunzel’s escape from her tower and her journey across the kingdom with Flynn. Their unlikely partnership, and the romance that develops along the way, remains at the heart of the tale.
Legacy and Expectations
The original Tangled was a significant success for Disney, grossing around $592 million worldwide against a hefty $260 million budget. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song with
‘I See the Light’
. The film’s blend of adventure, humour, and music struck a chord with audiences, setting a high bar for the live-action version.
With Croft and Manheim at the helm, and a director known for his flair with musicals, expectations are running high. The casting of Mother Gothel remains a point of speculation, but the production is moving forward, aiming to capture the spirit of the original while offering something fresh for a new generation.
