Tangled live-action remake sparks fan fury for all the wrong reasons

Got a live-action Tangled remake on the way, and if you thought Disney fans were chill about new versions of their big favourites, guess again. This one isn't out for a while, it's still shooting in Spain, but already people have clocked something that's winding them right up.

New Castle, New Colours—And People Aren't Happy

Some fresh set photos have leaked, giving us a peek inside the kingdom. It looks, well... blue. Proper blue. If you remember the 2010 original, Rapunzel's kingdom was all dramatic purples and golds—the sun banners, the castle decor, all of it. Disney usually sticks pretty closely to the animation when they do these remakes. Moana, Beauty and the Beast—same old palette, just shinier faces. This time, though, they've switched up the colours in a big way. That's rattled fans, to put it mildly.

Theories and Speculation: Why Switch Out the Purple?

• Several fans reckon there’s a story reason. One theory is that the kingdom is meant to be in mourning while Rapunzel's disappeared, so they swap the purple for blue until she comes back and everything's cheery again. There's some old-school Disney precedent for that—Snow White had something similar going on in the art direction.
• On the other hand, one particularly savvy fan floated a more technical reason: digital cameras apparently struggle with violet shades, often reading them as blue. The thinking is, they'll use blue during filming then tamper with the footage, tweaking lighting and filters so the finished movie looks properly purple.
• And then you've got the purists, arguing that royal purple is baked into the story's world—real history stuff, sign of aristocracy, all that. They see the blue as a pointless downgrade.

Not all the differences are just about colour, either. There’s some grumbling about new sun designs on the castle tapestries. Details matter when it comes to Disney iconography, apparently—change it, and you'll hear about it.

Who's Actually in This Thing?

Disney hasn't officially blasted out cast lists left and right, but reports say Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, with Milo Manheim, Kathryn Hahn, and Diego Luna also onboard. Michael Gracey (he of The Greatest Showman) is directing, and the script comes from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.

And for those tracking whether they'll recreate all the original's best bits: set photos have already revealed a glimpse at Rapunzel's tower, plus the return of one much-loved side character (you can probably guess which).

Where This Is All Headed

That first Tangled film, the animated one, pulled in over $590 million worldwide and got plenty of praise when it came out. Disney did consider a proper sequel at one point, according to the original co-director, but binned that plan and decided to go full remake instead. If you're waiting to see when this new version lands, you're going to have to keep waiting—there's no release date announced yet.
