No two-year wait: The Big Bang Theory spin-off’s second season is coming in 2027

Let’s not drag it out: Stuart Fails To Save The Universe fans won’t be twiddling their thumbs for ages waiting for the next batch. The HBO Max sci-fi comedy’s second season is not only official, but the brains behind it are sprinting into action faster than most shows even get their catering sorted.

Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady are back steering the ship, scripts now underway for Season 2. They’re sticking with the ‘write everything before filming’ plan – which, let’s be honest, actually worked pretty well for the first go. The team’s aiming to be done with the writing side before the cameras even start rolling, which Lorre says should be as soon as January or February.

Zak Penn, siding with optimism, has confirmed no endless wait this time, spelling it out fairly plainly: "It’s going to come out next year." Lorre’s also making noises about returning to Comic-Con armed with not just teasers, but finished episodes – possibly two, if the stars align. Nothing like a bit of fresh footage to stir the geek buzz before HBO even puts out an official trailer.

What to expect in Season 2

They’re looking at ten episodes for this run, if all goes to plan. Lorre is keeping the mission statement simple – he just wants "to not run dry". In less cryptic terms, Prady explained there’s no rigid rulebook for what worlds or stories they revisit: the writers have licence to bring back fan favourites if there’s a proper story, but they’re not about shoving crowd-pleasers back in just to tick boxes.

The first season pulled in a few familiar faces – Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, Kunal Nayyar, and Kaley Cuoco all made guest appearances, which had plenty of Big Bang Theory die-hards talking. The hope is to get more cameos for Season 2, but as of now, there’s nothing locked in. When quizzed about whether Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, or Simon Helberg could show up as alternate versions of their classic characters, all Prady would give away is:

As for the show’s mad custom opening credits, Prady hinted they’re not toning things down – on the contrary, they might try something "even wilder" for round two.

Scripts already in motion, shooting lined up for early next year, and a proper autumn 2027 launch window on HBO Max is now the target. It’s a much shorter turnaround than most streaming comedies, so if you’re a fan, you might want to clear your autumn viewing schedule now.
