Started it yet? Netflix’s new 6-episode horror series is already one of streaming’s biggest

Netflix has a decent nose for horror series, but this time, their latest hit isn’t something cooked up in their usual laboratory. Instead, it’s a show they’ve pinched straight from AMC+ — one that was actually cancelled about six months ago. Now, with a bit of Netflix magic and the benefit of a second go-around, it’s finally getting the attention that eluded it during its original run.

Vampires, Spies, and Second Chances

Let’s set the scene: Talamasca: The Secret Order originally aired on AMC+ from 19th October to 23rd November, 2025. This was actually the third TV series in what AMC calls the Immortal Universe, spun from Anne Rice’s novels. First came Interview with the Vampire in 2022 (a proper return to the bloodsucker genre, that one), then Mayfair Witches in 2023, and finally AMC tried something a bit different with Talamasca last year. Spoiler: it didn’t quite work out for them.

The set-up: Nicholas Denton stars as Guy Anatole, fresh out of law school with the handy ability to read minds. He’s recruited into the shadowy 'Talamasca', a secret society monitoring the goings-on of immortal creatures lurking about. Guy gets swept into an international caper: sent to London by veteran operative Helen (Elizabeth McGovern) to look into a dodgy vampire named Jasper (William Fichtner), who’s managed to worm his way into the Talamasca’s Motherhouse itself. It’s very much spies-meet-supernatural, and, interestingly, the first of these Anne Rice TV offerings that isn’t adapted from any one of her books. Instead, it riffs on the ‘secret order’ background that crops up in both The Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches stories. Point is, brand new material — not just another retelling.

Critical Meh, Audience Shrug

Truth be told, the series landed with a bit of a thud, both with Rotten Tomatoes critics (61%) and the audience (67%). Its ratings lagged well behind the other two shows in this shared universe. So, AMC swung the axe in March 2026 before a second series could even begin filming. William Fichtner, who played the haunted vampire Jasper, was honest about the early end when chatting to CBR:

'I just don't think it was as gripping as it could have been,' he explained. And it wasn’t for lack of ambition: 'I knew where they were going for Season 2. Scripts were all written. I knew where they were going, and it was cool, but just not meant to be.'

Netted by Netflix — and Suddenly Soaring

This would probably be where the story fades out — except Netflix swooped in. They added Talamasca: The Secret Order to their streaming library on 23rd August 2026, and suddenly, the show’s seen a resurrection. Somehow, it shot right up to second place in the US Top 10 chart, just behind the last season of Outer Banks. After being all but invisible on AMC+, it’s now sitting comfortably as Netflix’s flavour of the week.

Talamasca: The Secret Order debuted on Netflix and rocketed to #2 in the US Top 10 within days.

Timing-wise, it’s not a huge surprise Netflix is doubling down on horror and Anne Rice-adjacent franchises: the streamer struck a new $500 million, five-year licensing deal with AMC in July to keep every Walking Dead spinoff under the Netflix banner until at least 2032. Talamasca might have originally died on AMC+, but the Netflix afterlife seems to agree with it.
