As Maul - Shadow Lord wraps its first season on Disney+, star and consulting producer Sam Witwer teases the Darth Maul series will return for season 2 sooner than fans expect.

If you thought Maul – Shadow Lord was going to pull a typical Star Wars move and leave us drifting in a black hole of ‘wait and see’, there’s good news—Season 2 is coming sooner than you might expect. No, we don’t have an exact date (curse those Lucasfilm NDAs), but the teases from the people actually making the show are surprisingly optimistic.

Not Another Endless Hiatus… Allegedly

Sam Witwer—the voice behind Darth Maul and a consulting producer on the series—just finished up a little Q&A as Season 1 wrapped on Disney+. Fans have been buzzing about when we get more ‘Shadow Lord’, especially since Disney+ put out that Season 2 renewal announcement in April 2026. Turns out, you won’t have to wait an eternity for Maul’s next move.

Witwer says: 'It’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long.'

He also admitted he actually knows the release date for Season 2. (Insert Jedi mind trick face.) He just can’t tell us. Of course.

What Does 'Not Too, Too Long' Actually Mean?

So let’s play detective with Star Wars history for a second. Prior animated shows like The Clone Wars and Rebels managed an annual release rhythm, while The Bad Batch made us wait about 18 months between its first two seasons.

  • Clone Wars & Rebels: New seasons, roughly every year
  • The Bad Batch: About a year and a half between Seasons 1 and 2
  • Shadow Lord: Season 1 wrapped May 4, 2026 — so, odds are, late 2027 isn’t a crazy prediction for Season 2

Disney+ probably won’t mess with a formula that’s working, especially since Shadow Lord is sporting a ridiculous 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes right now. So yeah, expect something in that 12-18 month window, barring a Sith-level disaster.

The Show’s Unexpected Heat (Even for a Star Wars Spin-off)

Witwer has been honest about being blindsided by how much people care about this show. He figured they had a solid story, but didn’t see fandom melting down in quite this way. Now the creative team basically feels the pressure to top themselves for Season 2. His words:

'The entire team, myself included, feels a tremendous responsibility to slam our foot into the gas.'

Translation: They know fans will riot (metaphorically) if Season 2 doesn’t deliver.

Filoni’s Mandate: Make It Legendary

And then there’s Dave Filoni, Mr. Cowboy Hat himself, who apparently told the Shadow Lord team to make Season 2 the single best thing they’ve ever worked on. Not exactly low-pressure, but hey—when you’re telling 'modern myths,' as Witwer put it, half-measures aren’t really an option.

The Final Word (For Now)

Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 is in the works, it’s not light-years away, and the people behind it genuinely care (maybe more than even they expected). For now, all we can do is hit repeat on that finale and speculate… but the Force is looking strong with this one.
