Star Trek star hints a Captain Kirk spinoff could finally be on the way

Let’s face it, Star Trek fans never really give up on seeing their favourite captains return to the bridge—no matter how many times the franchise says goodbye. Case in point: Paul Wesley, the current face of Captain Kirk in Strange New Worlds, is still banging the drum for that long-rumoured spin-off. And the way he tells it, he’s as in the dark as the rest of us… but absolutely game if Paramount makes the call. Not that they’ve actually called.

The Lowdown on the Kirk Spin-off

If you’ve not been following the breadcrumbs, here’s what’s happening: Strange New Worlds is due to bow out after its fifth season, leaving Captain Kirk sort of on the launch pad, if you will. Enter ‘Star Trek: Year One’—the possible next addition to the TV Trek family. Nothing cemented, but there’s been a fair bit of talk about it centring on Kirk’s very early days as Enterprise boss.

Wesley’s Not-so-Secret Enthusiasm

Paul Wesley, now basically the go-to Kirk for younger Trek fans, sat down at the recent FanX Comic Convention in Indianapolis and gave an update—not that it was especially conclusive. He chatted about the spin-off prospects, recent casting moves, and why he (and most of the current cast) would be happy to keep beaming up for another round.

Just to highlight, here’s what Wesley said on the matter, which pretty much sums up the inside state of play:

'We talk about it all the time, and we’d love to see it happen. No word yet, though. I think Paramount’s lost my number.'

Joking aside, it’s pretty obvious the cast are up for it—but the studio is keeping its cards close to the chest.

New Faces on the Old Bridge

Things got more interesting, casting-wise, now that Thomas Jane (yes, the Punisher alum) is in as Dr. ‘Bones’ McCoy, and Kai Murakami is set to play Hikaru Sulu. For Trek diehards, those names basically build out the rest of the classic bridge crew. Feels calculated, doesn’t it?

This rather suggestive bit of casting has, predictably, fuelled speculation that they’re putting everything in place for ‘Year One’ to advance once Strange New Worlds wraps.

What’s Actually Happening Behind the Scenes?

Here’s where it gets a bit messy. Executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are both onboard with the idea of a Kirk-led spin-off picking up directly after Strange New Worlds. But at the moment, Paramount hasn’t greenlit anything, and a few subtle signs don’t look great—production sets in Toronto for the current series have reportedly been pulled down already. So even if there’s enthusiasm in front of the camera—and in the writers’ room—it looks like the actual machinery of TV Trek is winding down for now.

As it stands, there’s no fresh live-action Star Trek project officially in production. For fans hoping to see more of Kirk’s first days in the captain’s chair, it’s just a waiting game—and probably a long one.
