Sons of Anarchy stars team up on a new series — just not like that
The Sons of Anarchy gang are reuniting on FX for a limited meta-thriller — and the wink-at-the-audience premise isn’t quite the nostalgia trip you might expect.
Well, here’s a turn up for the books: the Sons of Anarchy crew is getting back together — but don’t expect them to roll up in full leathers or start quoting Jax Teller any time soon. FX has commissioned a brand new limited series called Legends, which brings a big chunk of the original gang into a very different kind of spotlight.
The Cast Returns (Sort Of)
This isn’t the usual spin-off business. Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, and Ron Perlman headline a reunion draped in meta-layers, not motorcycle vests. They’re joined by Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi — most of the main faces from SAMCRO’s glory days, effectively.
But here’s the curveball: the cast are playing exaggerated versions of themselves, not the actual bikers. The show centres on them reuniting at a fan convention dedicated to their fictional past, before the event takes a darker, more dangerous detour into thriller territory. If it sounds a bit surreal, that’s the idea — reality and fiction get properly tangled.
Legends will feature the original Sons of Anarchy cast playing themselves as they face real-world danger at a fan convention, blurring the line between art and life.
Who’s Behind It?
This whole caper was cooked up by Charlie Hunnam in collaboration with Jonathan Groff (not that one — the showrunner, not the Frozen actor, in case you wondered). They’re both executive producing, along with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. Production duties are split between FX Productions and 20th Television.
FX's chief, Nick Grad, is apparently thrilled, calling Hunnam’s concept "a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know." It sounds like FX reckon this’ll be catnip for anyone who’s missed the original mayhem — with a knowing wink to the fandom built around it.
The Biker Legacy (and What The Cast Has Been Up To)
The original Sons of Anarchy, created by Kurt Sutter, first hit screens back in 2008 and ran a solid seven seasons. It was one of FX’s first proper scripted dramas to take off in a big way, and its shadow’s still pretty long. No word yet on when exactly Legends is airing, so you’ll have to mark your calendars with a question mark for now.
Sons of Anarchy debuted in 2008, launched seven seasons, and became early FX royalty.
Meanwhile, Charlie Hunnam is still busy racking up credits elsewhere: he snagged his first Emmy nomination recently for Monster: The Ed Gein Story and popped up in projects like The Gentlemen, Pacific Rim, and Shantaram. Clearly, he’s got plenty going on besides biker nostalgia.
