The curse, explained

Generations ago, a bride watched her groom die on their wedding day and begged Death to bring him back. Death agreed, at a price: every future member of the bloodline must marry their true soulmate by sundown on their wedding day, or bleed to death.

When the curse eventually reached that resurrected groom's descendant — the man we know as The Witness (Zlatko Buric) — he saved himself by jilting his bride, Marianne, at the altar.

The curse jumped to her bloodline instead. Marianne married a man named Thomas Harkin, Rachel's ancestor, and The Witness was punished with immortality and one duty: to attend every wedding in the Harkin line, forever.

That's why Rachel's mother (Victoria Pedretti) bled to death on her own wedding day — she wasn't her husband's soulmate. Her father cut baby Rachel from her body while repeating "I'm sorry", a scene a hiding child (Nicky's brother Jules) witnessed and turned into the family's "Sorry Man" legend. The monster in the woods was never a monster. It was trauma.

The altar twist

At the ceremony, Rachel commits — she says her vows. Nicky (Adam DiMarco), shaken by revelations about his parents' marriage and still not believing the curse is real, says no. As showrunner Haley Z. Boston put it to Netflix's Tudum in 2026:

"If only he'd done it months ago and not right there at the altar."

Because Rachel is refused rather than married, the curse transfers to Nicky's bloodline at sundown, and Cunningham wedding guests start haemorrhaging where they stand. Nicky, now a believer, slips the ring onto Rachel's finger and says "I do" — completing the ceremony without her consent. It kills her.

He wasn't her soulmate, and by then she knew it: a man who never believed her couldn't be. His family's curse remains regardless. He loses everything, twice.

So who is the Witness at the end?

Rachel. The old Witness finally gets to die, and Rachel is resurrected in his role — immortal, unmarriable, condemned to observe every wedding in the Cunningham bloodline. Her first act is a warning to young Jude: be very careful who you choose to marry.

The reveals along the way

• The potion — Rachel discovers a ritual that would force her to become Nicky's soulmate, brewed from something living, something dead (her own toe), something stolen, and something red. She makes it, then refuses to drink it — she won't rewrite herself for a marriage.
• Victoria's secret — the Cunninghams' cagey behaviour has a mundane explanation: matriarch Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is dying and hiding it.
• The connected families — Rachel's birth, her mother's death, and Jules's childhood trauma all happened on the same day.

Boston has said she wrote the ending before anything else. It shows.
