Amazon’s Tomb Raider adaptation is gathering pace, with Sigourney Weaver reportedly joining Sophie Turner in the cast. The series aims to reimagine the franchise and link it closely with the games.

Amazon’s much-discussed take on Tomb Raider is moving forward, with word that Sigourney Weaver is in negotiations to join the ensemble. While details about her prospective role remain under wraps, Weaver would appear alongside Sophie Turner, who is stepping into the boots of Lara Croft for this new production. The script is being penned by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as executive producer, with Chad Hodge sharing showrunner and executive producer duties.

Weaver’s involvement brings considerable gravitas to the project. Known for her iconic portrayal of Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise, she’s no stranger to genre-defining roles. She’s also set to make an appearance in the Star Wars universe next year, joining The Mandalorian and Grogu, and continues her work in James Cameron’s Avatar series, where she plays both Dr. Grace Augustine and the Na’vi character Kiri. Audiences can next catch her as Kiri in Avatar: Fire and Ash, due for release on 19 December.

Production Developments and Cast

The Tomb Raider series was first announced in 2023, sparking plenty of speculation. In April 2025, reports surfaced suggesting the project had been cancelled, but these proved unfounded. Confirmation soon followed that Turner had been cast as the lead, with filming scheduled to commence in 2026. The production company, Story Kitchen, has outlined ambitious plans for the show, aiming to

“reinvent the franchise on a massive scale, interconnecting a new live-action television series and video games into a unified storytelling universe.”

Turner, best known for her role in Game of Thrones, will be taking on the challenge of portraying Lara Croft, a character with a rich legacy in both gaming and film. The addition of Weaver to the cast only heightens anticipation, as fans speculate about the direction the series might take and the characters she could bring to life.

Franchise Ambitions and Future Prospects

Amazon’s adaptation is not just another retelling; it’s positioned as a bold reimagining that seeks to bridge the gap between the small screen and the world of video games. The intention is to create a cohesive narrative universe, blending new stories with established lore. This approach reflects a growing trend in entertainment, where interconnected storytelling across different media is becoming increasingly popular.

As of now, there’s no official word on when viewers can expect the series to premiere. In the meantime, those eager for more can look forward to a host of upcoming television dramas and adaptations based on popular video games, which continue to attract attention from both fans and critics alike.
