Short on time? The Peaky Blinders creator’s 12-episode WWII series has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
The small screen is eyeing a side of war we’ve never seen — and the angle could seriously shake up the usual battlefield fare.
If you think World War II television has been done to death, you probably haven’t stumbled across SAS: Rogue Heroes yet. The big names — Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Dunkirk, all the usual suspects — get most of the glory, but this one’s quietly built up a cult following. In fact, nearly two years after its last new episode, it’s still pulling in impressively big numbers on streaming, which, frankly, is pretty unusual for a show in the ‘gritty men blowing things up’ genre.
SAS: Rogue Heroes made its debut on BBC One back in 2022 and currently runs to two full seasons — both of which scored a rare 100% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Where the Action Picks Up
This lot aren’t your polished, upper-crust officers marching in neat lines. SAS: Rogue Heroes follows a handful of British misfits — David Stirling, Jock Lewes, and Paddy Mayne — desperate enough to try forming a new type of unit (the now-legendary SAS, or Special Air Service) to take on the Germans and Italians. Their first effort goes sideways pretty fast, but, being stubborn, they press on, and we get this mad hybrid of big action, strong personalities and proper chaos. It’s more than just another shootout-heavy war retelling; the show actually gets at how messy and shambolic history really is.
Both seasons have kept a tight grip on those sky-high reviews: critics were unanimous, and even the audience scores are hanging in at 89% and 84% for seasons one and two. Given how fussy audiences are these days, that’s no small achievement.
Streaming Stats and Where to Watch
The big twist? After bustling onto BBC One, the series made a quick hop over to MGM+, and that’s where it’s now streaming — both seasons, all twelve episodes. Possibly helped by the competition (think Project Hail Mary and American Hostage in the same top 10), SAS: Rogue Heroes keeps bobbing up and down the streamer’s most-watched charts. Clearly, word-of-mouth is doing its job, because the fanbase is still very much alive and kicking.
Season 3 Confirmed — And Filming
If you’re wondering if there’s more to come, the answer’s yes. Season 3 is already in production — filming started towards the tail-end of 2025. We still don’t have an official premiere date, but the show’s creator, Steven Knight, did tease fans with a brief update earlier this year. Here’s how Knight described the latest round of chaos in an interview last January:
We're just shooting at the moment. It's in France, and I can't say any more than that, but it's coming out beautifully.
