Secret's out — Marvel Studios' MCU spy thriller series Zodiac has a title and release date
Marvel Television has confirmed a new original spy series bound for Disney+ in 2028 — but the title is the bit you’ll want to clock.
The last few months have not been kind to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+, with more cancellations and abrupt endings than a soap opera cliffhanger. But amid the chopping block carnage, Marvel’s just pulled a surprise move—unveiling a brand new series called Zodiac at New York Comic-Con.
Zodiac lands in 2028, making it part of Marvel’s Phase 7 lineup on Disney+, with production slated to kick off spring 2027.
First things first: Wonder Man—which had only just scored a Season 2 renewal—was unceremoniously axed in July 2026. And then, like clockwork, word dropped that Daredevil: Born Again will call it a day after its third season in 2027. It’s all playing into wider chatter that Marvel Television is quietly stepping back from big, interconnected live-action series for streaming, at least for the time being.
Meet Zodiac: The Mysterious Newcomer
So what’s this new project you’ve not heard of before? Zodiac is being billed as a spy thriller, but beyond that, Marvel have kept things strictly hush-hush. Filming starts next spring, with casting to begin in the next couple of weeks—though don’t expect any wild fan-theory confirmations just yet.
For those who know their comics, Zodiac isn’t just any old codename. The original version was a supervillain collective made up of twelve powerhouses, each based (quite literally) on the signs of the Western zodiac. They first cropped up back in The Avengers #72 all the way back in January 1970, and have been popping up now and then ever since. Whether the new show will stick to that premise, or just nab the cool-sounding name, remains one for the rumour-mongers to chew over.
No Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Revival—But Hope Lingers
A fair few fans had convinced themselves that the next big Marvel spy series for Disney+ would pick up where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left off, but Marvel’s shot that down for now. Still, it's not completely off the table—at least if you ask S.H.I.E.L.D. alumni Chloe Bennet. She’s been making it clear she’d happily pick up her mantle as Daisy Johnson, aka Quake, if Marvel came knocking.
Here’s Bennet in her own words, taken from a recent chat with Elle about the lasting impact of playing Daisy on TV:
"Totally. I’m obsessed with Daisy. I feel like I am Daisy. I would be so protective of her. I’m still low-key angry that they don’t fully acknowledge this as canon—the real followers will understand that. We were the first MCU TV show, and we did 130-something hour-long episodes. We spent a lot of time in people’s homes, and I spent a lot of my life playing this character and this young woman growing into her power. There’s a lot of symbolism in that, especially looking back now. I would love to play her with the growth that I’ve had since I’ve had a break from the role."
Phase 7 and What’s Next
So where does Zodiac fit in the grand MCU plan? It’ll launch as part of Phase 7 alongside a proper mutant-packed X-Men film, a new Ghost Rider, and Black Panther III. All of this comes post-Avengers: Secret Wars, which is tipped to hit the reset button on the MCU just in time for the franchise’s twentieth birthday—yes, that’s two full decades of Marvel films and shows.
The strategy, or at least what we’ve seen of it, is about stepping away from MCU series that rely on cameos and tangled plots with the movies, and focusing more on standalone themes and smaller scale stories. Major comic book heroes are being parked for now, it seems.
And before Zodiac even arrives, there’s still a bit of unfinished business for fans of Marvel's TV universe. VisionQuest, the last entry in the WandaVision–Agatha All Along–VisionQuest arc, lands on Disney+ on 14 October 2026 with a double-episode premiere. It’s not just the trilogy capper, but also the final MCU release before the next Avengers flick, Avengers: Doomsday.
