Scarlett Johansson could win two Oscars in one night — and not in the categories you would guess
Paper Tiger reaches cinemas on 13 November. Netflix is campaigning Too Much To Ask, which she sings in Brad Bird's Ray Gunn.
If you thought Scarlett Johansson was done chasing Oscar glory after her double-nomination saga back in 2020, think again. The stars are very much lining up for her this year—she could, theoretically, bag two Academy Awards at the same ceremony. Hard not to get déjà vu, but this time, she might actually walk away with the statuettes.
Another awards season, another Johansson campaign
First up, Paper Tiger. It’s a gritty crime thriller, with Johansson leading the cast as Best Actress bait if there ever was some. The film lands in cinemas on 13 November 2026, aiming squarely for the voters’ sweet spot. Almost simultaneous to that, she’s set to compete for another Oscar in a completely different category. Yes, really.
Netflix confirms it’s pushing a song called Too Much To Ask—performed by Johansson herself—for Best Original Song from its animated feature Ray Gunn. This gives her a real shot at not just one, but possibly two nods at the upcoming 2027 Oscars, and in separate disciplines, no less.
Johansson is performing and lending her voice to the main character, Venus Nova, in Ray Gunn, and Too Much To Ask will officially campaign in the Oscars’ song category.
As for context: Ray Gunn is helmed by Brad Bird (the director behind The Incredibles and Ratatouille). It’s an animated, retro-futuristic caper set in an alternate 1939 and boasts a voice cast including Sam Rockwell, John Ratzenberger, and Tom Waits. Slated for a Netflix debut on 18 December 2026, it’ll be hard to miss come awards chatter.

Remind you of 2020?
This isn’t Johansson’s first Oscar-adjacent rodeo. Back in 2020, she was in the running for two major acting trophies: Best Actress for Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story (remember that masterclass in shouting matches opposite Adam Driver?) and Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit from Taika Waititi, where she played Rosie, mother to the titular boy in Nazi Germany. But alas, she came away empty-handed that year—Renée Zellweger swooped in for Judy, and, in a particularly bitter twist, her Marriage Story co-star Laura Dern took Supporting Actress. If there’s ever been an occasion for unfinished business, this is it.
Scarlett Johansson’s previous Oscar double bid in 2020 ended with zero wins, despite two nominations for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.
