Ryan Gosling exits the next film from Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, triggering a casting shake-up.

Ryan Gosling’s career has been firing on all cylinders lately—if you even casually glance at box office numbers, it’s impossible to miss. The guy’s been in critical favorites and crowd-pleasers back to back. In the last couple years alone, he’s racked up a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Barbie (a blockbuster with staying power) and headlined The Fall Guy in 2024. It’s all been nonstop hits for the Canadian wonder-boy, and as of this year, he kicked off 2026 with Project Hail Mary, which had the biggest opening weekend of any film all year. Not too shabby.

So, about Gosling and 'The Daniels'

Speaking of career momentum: a lot of fans were hyped when word trickled out that Gosling would be working with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. If those names don’t instantly ring a bell, just remember Everything Everywhere All at Once – the movie that basically cleaned house at the Oscars and dropped all over the 2022 'best of' lists.

Their next project was supposed to reunite them with big studio backing (Universal producing), with Gosling leading an 'event film' set to bring in an impressive ensemble cast. Filming was supposed to kick off in Los Angeles this summer, which had a lot of us thinking: Are we about to get a wild, star-studded sci-fi trip with Gosling front and center?

Plans Change (Because, Of Course They Do)

And now... not so fast. According to Variety, Gosling is officially out of the project, and it all comes down to scheduling—one of those classic cases where someone just can’t make the dates work. Gosling’s exit happened just a couple of months after the initial casting announcement back in March, and by all accounts, everyone’s on good terms about it. No wild behind-the-scenes drama, just a calendar that won’t cooperate.

This one hurts a bit for film nerds: Gosling and the Daniels teaming up just felt like a slam dunk. And this was already planned as a major sci-fi 'event film,' whatever that ends up meaning in a post-Marvel world. Universal was swinging for the fences with this one—the movie’s release date was originally set for June 12, 2027, then got nudged to November 19. So, clearly, this wasn’t some small, experimental thing.

Gosling’s Schedule: Busy is an Understatement

It’s honestly not surprising he’s got scheduling problems. Project Hail Mary—the movie he’s in theaters with right now—has already pulled in more than $300 million in just a couple weeks. The dude is basically the safest blockbuster bet in Hollywood at the moment.

And looking ahead to 2027, he’s already lined up for another massive gig: Star Wars. No, not as some side character, but a tentpole role in Star Wars: Starfighter. This one’s a big deal because it’s actually only the second Star Wars movie Lucasfilm will have released theatrically since 2019, and it’s being helmed by Shawn Levy (the guy directing Deadpool & Wolverine this year, which honestly looks nuts).

'He’s joining an absolutely stacked cast—think Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith, Mia Goth—the kind of lineup that signals a proper summer blockbuster. And yes, he’s already wrapped filming for that.'

From Star Wars to (Maybe Someday) The Daniels

For now, Gosling’s plate is more than full, and that means his team-up with the EEAAO directors just isn’t happening—at least not this time around. Maybe eventually, if the universe aligns, he’ll find space on the calendar to jump into one of their projects. But for now, chalk it up as one of those 'what could have been' situations that Hollywood seems to specialize in.

What’s Next?

  • 2024: Big hit with The Fall Guy.
  • 2023: Barbie absolutely blows up, gets him an Oscar nomination.
  • 2026: Project Hail Mary launch—opens huge, easily clears $300 million worldwide in its first couple weeks.
  • 2027: He’s locked in for Star Wars: Starfighter (already wrapped), with a cast that’s pure A-list energy.
  • The Daniels team-up: Off the table (for now), due to scheduling—release window moved from June to November 2027, still with Universal.

So, as it stands, Gosling’s not suffering for career momentum, but it’s a shame this Daniels project didn’t pan out—at least, not yet. If there’s one thing to bet on, it’s that the crossover between his blockbuster streak and whoever’s hot in the director’s chair is just a matter of time. Until then, enjoy the box office run, and keep an eye out for that Star Wars drop next year. Something tells me we’ll be talking about that one for a while, too.
