Fast & Furious is revving up for TV, with a welcome update setting a release window — and Vin Diesel in the mix.

Well, this was inevitable, wasn’t it? Fast & Furious — that long-running monument to car-based chaos, family, and gravely delivered speeches — is finally crashing through another wall: the telly. Yes, Universal’s racing juggernaut is moving to the small screen, with Peacock ordering its first ever live-action series set squarely within the Fast & Furious universe.

The new show is still untitled and, for now, plot details are being kept about as secret as Dominic Toretto’s next double-cross. But what’s official is the timeline: Universal are aiming to have the series on air in 2028, lining it up perfectly with the arrival of Fast Forever — apparently the big 'final' film — which is currently scheduled for cinemas on 17 March 2028. So if you ever wanted to binge car chases as a warm-up for the last film, mark your calendars.

Universal’s Fast & Furious live-action series is targeting a 2028 premiere, the same year as the franchise’s final movie.

The Brains Behind the Bonkers

So, who’s actually driving this thing? Well, Vin Diesel himself is on board as executive producer, which he announced during NBCUniversal’s May Upfronts (aka that annual TV industry bonanza where celebrities try not to sound bewildered by their own projects). Diesel explained that, after a decade of toying with TV, he finally warmed to the idea when Donna Langley took charge of NBCUniversal’s telly division. Apparently, she convinced him the 'family' — both onscreen and off — would be safe.

Here’s how Diesel justified going full television at the event:

“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies, but over the last decade, we’ve realized that the fans have wanted more, they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”

If you’re wondering about the actual showrunners: Mike Daniels (credits include Sons of Anarchy and Shades of Blue) and Wolfe Coleman (a writer on Shades of Blue and 9-1-1: Lone Star) are writing and helming the pilot, as well as exec producing. Daniels, for what it’s worth, tends to do quite well with stories involving cops, crime, and questionable decision-making — so, pretty much bang on brand for this franchise.

Other names along for the ride: Sam Vincent (partnering with Diesel via One Race), Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty from Original Film, plus Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan (the latter, a mainstay of the Fast scripts). No word yet on which — or if any — of the films’ baton-passing characters will actually appear onscreen. Universal Television is producing it.

What’s Actually New Here?

This won’t be the first time Fast has hit TV, but it is the first live-action crack. Netflix had that mad animated spin-off, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, running a respectable six seasons from 2019 to 2021. But now, we’re in for real stunts (well, as real as CGI allows), human beings, and the full soap opera of explosions and brotherhood.

The main thing missing at this stage: cast and plot. No cast revealed, zilch on storylines. So, just like the movies’ logic, we’re mostly in the dark — but not for long.
