Ready for more Widow’s Bay? Matthew Rhys just revealed the season 2 date window
Good news for Widow’s Bay fans: Matthew Rhys has revealed the season 2 release window, so you finally know when to expect the follow-up.
If you were hoping to catch Widow's Bay back on your screen any time soon, brace yourself for a bit of a wait. The brilliantly oddball Apple TV+ comedy—not exactly short on twists or eccentric locals—has just had its potential return year spelled out, straight from the horse's mouth: series star Matthew Rhys himself.
Rhys told The Direct, while out flogging Golden Axe, that the cast aren't due to start filming until late April next year, making a 2028 launch likely: "Ah, sadly, it'll be... it'll be 2028, because we don't start shooting 'til April of next year."
For context, that's a gap of around four years between seasons. Not ideal, but no one could accuse Apple of rushing their streaming slate. Rhys—who's clocked up a few Emmys by now—added that the writers are only just back in their groove for new episodes. And, in a refreshingly blunt moment, he acknowledged that these drawn-out waits wind up annoying viewers, but said streamers like to make people sweat over whether a series gets the future greenlight, which only slows everything down further.
Widow's Bay won't return to Apple TV+ before 2028.
What's Widow's Bay again?
If your memory's foggy after all this time: Widow's Bay is set on a remote American island (think: 40 miles off the New England coast, low mobile signal, and a whiff of isolation-induced madness). Rhys stars as the well-meaning but slightly hapless Mayor Tom Loftis, desperate to shake off the town's reputation for bad luck—some say it's outright cursed—and actually get the locals to respect him. No easy feat when the last proper broadband signal was lost during the Obama administration.
The first series was all faintly suspicious small-town types, American folklore weirdness, and Tom's masterplan to revive the community by luring in tourists. Things seemed finally to be looking up—until, naturally, those visiting outsiders started poking their noses into the island's secrets, setting up a satisfyingly ominous cliffhanger.
The cast and creative
The show was created and showrun by Katie Dippold, of Parks and Rec/Spy fame, with Rhys leading a cast that also features Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey. It's a fairly grown-up affair, TV-MA rating and all, with episodes still streaming on Apple TV+—for now, anyway. Season two will eventually pick up where things left off, but by the time it drops, your teenage son might be off to uni.
