Ready for more Disney deja vu? Every upcoming live-action remake and sequel in one place
Disney’s conveyor belt of live-action remakes and sequels rolls on—including Tangled and Cruella 2—but that’s just the start of what’s on the way.
If you thought Disney might finally be winding down on the live-action remake racket, think again. Not only are they not slowing up, they're doubling down—dredging up every IP in the vault, from Sleeping Beauty spin-offs all the way to deep cuts like Rose Red and Genies. Some land massively—Lilo & Stitch (2025) cracked that golden $1 billion line at the box office. Others—not so much. The Moana remake in 2026 managed just about $260 million worldwide. But whatever you think of the trend, it shows no sign of letting up. If anything, the slate is getting longer. Classic princess stories, side characters, animal capers—you name it, Disney's probably got someone writing a script for it. Some films barrelling ahead, others left mouldering in limbo. Let’s untangle where everything’s at today.
Lilo & Stitch (2025) became Disney's rare billion-dollar live-action remake, while Moana (2026) fell short of expectations at $260 million worldwide.
Coming Soon(ish): What's Actually Happening?
Of all the new projects, Tangled is the one making the loudest noise at the moment. After a load of sneaky set pics leaked earlier this year, Disney went ahead and dropped a proper sneak peek at D23 in August. This one’s got Teagan Croft starring as Rapunzel (yep, the princess with the hair), Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. They've nabbed Spain for their on-location shoots, and both Croft and Manheim banged on about how buzzing they are to be bringing the story to life with all that Mediterranean scenery.
Tangled is due for release on March 31, 2028.
Then there’s Lilo & Stitch 2, which—unsurprisingly—debuted its own teaser at D23 too. This live-action sequel features Stitch getting zapped by Angel (another experiment), all very meta, with Stitch falling out of sight and Angel popping in to mug at the camera as the title slams down. Oddly enough, even though there's already an animated "Lilo & Stitch 2," this new film is going completely off-script with an original story instead of a retread. That's due Summer 2028.
Feeling a bit less straightforward is Stepsisters. It's a Cinderella spin-off focused on the so-called "evil" stepsisters, Drizella and Anastasia. Now, if you know your Disney sequels, you'll remember Anastasia got a fair shake in Cinderella II and III—so this isn’t as leftfield as it sounds. Helming this: there's Akiva Schaffer directing (he's just done the new Naked Gun), plus a writing squad: Dan Gregor, Doug Man (also Naked Gun), and Michael Montemayor (he co-wrote the new Tangled). No release date on this one yet; it's early doors.
For fans still stewing over the cancellation of the Princess Tiana series on Disney+ (axed in 2025), there’s now another film in the mix. It’s apparently being put together by Colman Domingo and Robert O’Hara, but it’s all under wraps—no casting, no plot details, no release window. They are aiming for an original story rather than another animated retell, but don’t expect solid news on this any time soon.
And then there’s Cruella 2—which is truly stuck in development quicksand. Emma Stone is meant to be back as the iconic anti-hero, with Craig Gillespie returning as director. Gillespie told The Playlist in June 2026 that the film is still 'on his agenda,' but beyond that, there's nothing in the way of production news or even a locked script. This one's been 'coming soon' for a good long while now.
The Ones Caught in Limbo
- Gaston: 2025 saw Deadline report that a feature film about Gaston (from Beauty and the Beast) was happening, script by Dave Callaham, producer Michelle Rejwan. New Gaston actor, apparently a new take on the story. Nothing since; it doesn't show up on any official pages for the writers or producers.
- Hercules: Announced in 2020 with the MCU's Russo brothers producing and Callaham (again) on script. Recently, Susan Egan (Meg's voice in the original) stirred up a bit of viral noise wishing for Zendaya and Tom Holland to play the leads. Beyond that, the project is completely silent, not listed on anyone’s IMDb as "active" right now.
- Prince Charming: This one’s been tossed between several hands. It was a quirky film about Prince Charming's brother (also called Prince Charming, naturally), with Stephen Chbosky writing/directing at first. In 2024, Paul King (Wonka) was announced as the new director/writer, and Chris Hemsworth as the man himself. Right now, King and Hemsworth both still have it listed as active projects.
- Genies: Billed as an Aladdin prequel about what genies get up to before granting wishes. Horror writers Shannon and Swift were in charge, with Tripp Vinson producing. This got an announcement in 2015…and literally nothing in the subsequent decade. Not on anyone's IMDb. Not officially canned. Just invisible.
- Hunchback: The rumour mill in 2019 claimed a live-action Hunchback of Notre Dame was being written by David Henry Hwang with Josh Gad supposedly producing/possibly starring (despite his own denials). Gad maintains there is a script and apparently, in his words, it's one of the best he's read. Alan Menken (music) has said adapting the darker themes for Disney is a tall order. No visible movement since.
- The Jungle Book 2: A follow-up to Jon Favreau's successful first effort here was in motion before the original even hit cinemas, with Favreau and writer Justin Marks attached again, plus Neel Sethi keen to return as Mowgli. But after Favreau finished up with The Lion King in 2019, all mention of the sequel dried up. IMDb still shows it listed for those involved, but no production chatter.
- Rose Red: Supposedly reimagining Snow White's estranged sister (from the Grimms' tales). Confirmed back in 2016, went through a couple of writers (including Evan Daugherty), with Tripp Vinson producing. After the first trade mentions, it went dead silent and disappeared from everyone’s work slate.
- The Sword in the Stone: This adaptation was announced in 2015. Bryan Cogman on script duty, Brigham Taylor to produce, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing. Fresnadillo told Screen Rant in 2024 that on his end at least, nothing’s happening any more, so the project's essentially flatlined.
- The Aristocats: Got the greenlight in 2022, with Will Gluck and Keith Bunin working on the script, plus the rather brilliant signing of Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson to direct and oversee music. In 2025 though, Questlove revealed he'd dropped out, and the sense is Disney quietly scrapped the whole lot. Maybe it’ll resurface with someone else at the helm, but nothing new has popped up yet.
If it looks like Disney's grazing the bottom of the barrel with some of these, you’re not wrong—but at the rate they’re going, that barrel’s bottom may never actually arrive.
