Prime Video’s Off-Campus is officially one of streaming’s biggest hits of the year

If you think Prime Video has gone quiet since The Boys and Reacher were last trending, think again—there’s another breakout hit quietly (well, not really quietly) dominating the charts. The show in question? Off-Campus, Prime Video’s latest attempt to cash in on the steamy, R-rated rom-com genre, and frankly, it’s working. There’s more sizzle and questionable decision making here than half the streamer’s back catalogue combined.

Off-Campus has held a Top 3 spot in Prime Video’s rankings ever since it premiered on 13 May 2026.

The Source Material and the Setup

Off-Campus didn’t just appear out of thin air. This eight-episode series is based on Elle Kennedy’s best-selling novel, something that spent ages blowing up on BookTok (hooray for horny TikTok). If we’re being honest, the book falls squarely into the “smut” shelf, and Prime’s not exactly shied away from that for the adaptation. Louisa Levy is the one who wrangled it onto screen, so if you love or hate it, she’s the one to thank/blame.

The basic pitch: Hannah Wells (played by Ella Bright), a music student, gets roped into pretending she’s dating someone she doesn’t even like – namely, the campus hockey superstar Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli). Obviously, if you’ve ever seen or read a rom-com in your life, you know that fake dating turns into something a lot realer and (in this case) steamier. Supporting faces include Mika Abdalla, Stephen Kalyn, Jalen Thomas Brooks, and Antonio Cipriano, ticking all the “university drama” boxes you’d expect.

How’s it Actually Doing?

This one’s not some niche sleeper either—it’s still third in Prime’s original series rankings well after its debut, trailing only behind Amazon’s action-comedy Ride or Die and, weirdly, Elle. Considering it’s had to fend off established juggernauts like Reacher, The Legend of Vox Machina, and even The Boys, that’s no small feat. It’s not just riding on fan thirst, either; Off-Campus has pulled an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 88% audience score backing it up. Some are even saying it’s improved on the male characters from the original book, which, if you’re familiar with the source, is sort of miraculous.

Book Fans and Faithful Adaptation… Or Not

Here’s where it gets a bit dicey if you’re a purist. While Levy’s adaptation keeps most of what made the book a hit, parts have been tweaked—some plot lines reshuffled, character details massaged to work on TV. That hasn’t caused much uproar, though, because this version’s managed to actually make certain side characters (especially the men) a bit more believable. Crucially, it looks like the core BookTok crowd—never easily pleased—have largely signed off, and that’s half the battle won. If you’re wondering why BookTok loved it so much before Amazon got involved: think big feelings, big drama, and a lot of hockey-based flirting. Or as much as you can jam into episodic telly, anyway.

What’s Next? More Steamy Drama

Given the numbers, you’d have to be mad to not renew it—and, lo and behold, Prime Video’s greenlit Season 2 already. Filming’s actually underway, so expect quicker turnaround than most streamer debuts. This season’s going to have extra competition though—the next big BookTok favourite getting adapted is Icebreaker, also about hockey, also trying to ride that ‘sport plus sex’ wave. Someone at Prime clearly thinks they’re onto something. Whether lightning strikes twice, we’ll see. For now, the Briar University hockey crew are very much sticking around.
