Fresh police records sharpen the picture around Hayden Panettiere’s death — and take the air out of the wilder foul-play rumours.

Bit of a grim one, this. Hayden Panettiere, best known for her stints in Heroes and Nashville, tragically died this week at just 36. When the news broke, her rep kept things vague, so nobody really knew what actually happened. Now we’ve got fresh details from the authorities—and no, the speculation about anything sinister going on looks completely off base.

Panettiere’s death was publicly confirmed early in the week, but police now say there’s no evidence of foul play.

What happened on Sunday

It was the Greenville Police who passed along more details. By their account, a call came in to emergency services at 1:51pm on Sunday, 16 August 2026. The report was for an "unresponsive female", later identified as Panettiere. Paramedics arrived, tried to help, but it was too late—she was declared dead there at the scene. The 911 call itself came from someone who knew Panettiere, not a stranger off the street or anything like that.

The official coroner’s investigation is still ongoing, but the police have stated clearly they don’t suspect anyone else was involved.

For now, the Greenville Police Department and the local Coroner’s Office are working together on the case.

Panettiere’s career (and her public struggles)

For those who only know her from one show, Panettiere started out in soaps—One Life to Live (as Sarah Roberts) and Guiding Light (Lizzie Spaulding) were two of her first. She did a turn in Remember the Titans as the football-obsessed Sheryl, then really hit it big as Claire Bennet, the cheerleader you had to "save", in Heroes. The fame train kept rolling with Nashville, where she played Juliette Barnes—her performance there even netted her two Golden Globe nominations.

  • Started acting in childhood—TV soaps, feature films, then primetime dramas
  • Breakout role as Claire in "Heroes"
  • Follow-up lead in "Nashville" on ABC
  • Two Golden Globe nominations for "Nashville"

"Busy" is putting it mildly—but lately, she’d also been open about her own battles. Earlier this year she published This Is Me: A Reckoning, laying bare issues like her bout with postpartum depression, the high-wire act of growing up famous, grief for her brother, and a complicated relationship with her mother. It’s all pretty raw stuff, especially considering how much she’s lived in the public eye.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, and her partner, Wladimir Klitschko.
