20th Century Studios’ latest slasher from Se7en and Sleepy Hollow writer Andrew Kevin Walker hits Hulu today, despite getting carved up in theaters — it’s sitting at a brutal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes from 45 reviews. R-rated and ready to stream, this one’s for the curious and the fearless.

Here’s one for the gorehounds and cult horror fans: 20th Century Studios has just dropped their latest slasher, 'Psycho Killer', onto Hulu, and it’s honestly a bit of a spectacle—just perhaps not in the way the studio had hoped. If you missed the fuss during its cinema stint (can’t blame you, considering the muted noise it made), this one is penned by Andrew Kevin Walker—the same bloke who gave us 'Se7en' and 'Sleepy Hollow' back in the day. That’s pedigree, at least on paper, but things haven’t exactly gone to plan for this R-rated effort.

The Reception: Not Exactly Glowing

Let’s get this out of the way: critics have been absolutely savage. 'Psycho Killer' is currently limping along with a paltry 9% critics' approval on Rotten Tomatoes (that’s out of 45 reviews, for anyone counting—so, not just a fluke). Bit of a car crash, frankly. Oddly enough though, regular punters seem a tad more forgiving, with an audience rating hovering around 36%. Better, but I wouldn’t call that a ringing endorsement either.

The Plot (Such As It Is)

So what’s all the fuss about? The premise goes like this: Georgina Campbell (from 'Barbarian') leads the charge as Jane Archer, a Kansas highway patrol officer whose husband gets brutally murdered. Instead of taking a sedative and a week off (as most would), she hunts down the culprit, only to discover he’s a full-blown sadistic serial killer with a downright warped agenda. It’s all dramatic close-ups, shadowy hallways and—you guessed it—a masked murderer. If any of that sounds familiar, well, you’re not wrong.

'Following the brutal murder of her husband, a Kansas highway patrol officer sets out on a journey to track down the perpetrator. As the hunt progresses, she comes to realize the man responsible is a sadistic serial killer, and the depth of his mental depravity and his sinister agenda is more twisted than anyone could have imagined.'

Who’s Stabbing, Who’s Screaming?

  • Georgina Campbell as Jane Archer (on the wrong end of the emotional wringer)
  • James Preston Rogers ('The Blackening') doing his best 'big scary bloke' routine as the Satanic Slasher
  • Logan Miller (from 'Escape Room') as Marvin
  • Malcolm McDowell ('A Clockwork Orange') pops up as Mr. Pendleton (because when you need menace, you call Malcolm)
  • Newcomer Grace Dove rounds things out as Agent Becky Collins

Behind the Scenes

Direction on this blood-spattered affair comes courtesy of Gavin Polone (who directed 'Twisted'). Walker didn’t just write it—he produced too, alongside Roy Lee, Matt Berenson and Arnon Milchan. There’s a veritable committee of executive producers: Martin Moszkowicz, Robert Kulzer, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann and Kat Landsberg all had their fingers in the pie. If you care about the technicals: Magnus Jønck is on cinematography, Sven Faulconer did the music, and editing comes from Derek Ambrosi. Costumes by Natalie Bronfman, sets by Roger Fires. So, plenty of talent on the payroll—for whatever that’s worth.

As of today, 'Psycho Killer' is streaming in the UK (and the US) exclusively on Hulu.
