Andy and Barbara Muschietti say the next chapter isn’t a matter of if but when—and they’re already teasing fresh plot details for the return.

So, people have been itching for updates on 'IT: Welcome to Derry', the TV prequel digging into the backstory of Stephen King’s infamously terrifying clown and the town it torments. The big question: is there going to be more after Season 1? Well, the answer’s basically 'yes', you just might have to wait for a press release to make it official.

Season 2: Muschiettis Say It’s Happening (Even If HBO Won't Say It Yet)

If you’ve been hoping for confirmation, the people to trust are Andy and Barbara Muschietti—the same sibling team behind the recent 'IT' movie reboot and now, this series. In a chat with Collider, Barbara Muschietti didn’t play coy:

'Yeah, it is going to be official... We’re all working towards it. We are working, the studio is working. It’s just that we want to make it real, and we need the material.'

Translation: Yes, Season 2 is in the works, even if HBO hasn’t done the full PR blast. According to Andy Muschietti, the formalities are just taking longer because—surprise—TV deals involve all sorts of 'deals and stuff.' (He didn’t want to bore us with the legal minutiae, and honestly, fair enough.)

'Sometimes the announcements come a little delayed because of deals and stuff. I don't want to get too granular about it, but there's a general intention to make it happen.'

Why No Official Announcement?

Barbara also gave some rare candor about how networks decide when to shout about renewals (or, in this case, quietly keep working):

'A lot of times, the announcements are the studio having to declare their confidence for the show. We don't need that because clearly we're good. So, when we do the green light, it's a real green light. It's not just like, “Okay, well, we'll try to put this out so people watch the show.” People have watched the show. It’s good.'

Or, in simpler terms: They know the series works, and they're moving forward because of that—not just for the hype. HBO is just being cautiously slow about the paperwork.

What’s Season 2 Actually Covering?

This is where the King lore gets fun. Pennywise (or 'It', if you prefer your eldritch monsters a little vaguer) comes back to feast every 27 years, then heads back into hiding. The original book and the movies focus on the 1950s and 1980s losers who finally team up to end the nightmare. 'Welcome to Derry' winds the clock even further back, so the first season and the planned second one will both explore earlier, probably lesser-known nightmares the town had with the monster. Basically, more history, more body count, more unsettling clown stuff.

Who’s In (And When Will They Say More)?

  • Developed by Andy and Barbara Muschietti (same folks who did the last two IT movies)
  • Plot: Backstory on Pennywise's reign of terror long before the kids we know
  • Season 2: In active development, just not 'HBO official' yet
  • Studio dragging its heels on paperwork, but that has not stopped the creative team from moving forward

As for casting details and airing dates, don’t expect specifics till HBO decides it’s time for another round of press—although the folks actually running the show seem perfectly content making things happen while the suits get their signatures in order.

If you want more deep dives on 'IT: Welcome to Derry' as this all rolls out, you might want to stick around or sign up for that newsletter—because the story’s still very much unfolding.

In short: Pennywise is not done eating.
