Oscar-nominated Marvel alum Stellan Skarsgård joins an untitled Apple TV+ thriller to star opposite Dakota Fanning, with Elle Fanning also on board in the Alex Cary-created series.

Well, here’s one casting combo I honestly didn’t see coming: Stellan Skarsgård—the Swedish Hollywood heavyweight who can juggle everything from art house misery to Marvel mayhem—is joining Dakota Fanning in Apple TV+’s next big thriller series. The title’s still secret (I know, always very helpful), but the show’s already drawing attention, partly because Dakota’s sister Elle Fanning is in the cast, too. If you like your prestige TV shows stocked with famous siblings and international corporate crime, this one’s got both, so buckle up.

The Setup: Spies, Crime, and Maybe a Little Romance

Here’s what I’ve pieced together: The show, created by Alex Cary (he of Homeland and other tense TV fare), revolves around a U.S. Treasury agent (that’s Dakota Fanning’s character) going deep undercover inside a mega conglomerate that’s as corrupt as it gets, with fingers apparently in both political and criminal pies all over the world. The catch? She’s supposed to bring down the organization from the inside, but gets emotionally tangled up with the presumed heir to its dark empire, who—surprise!—might not actually be a garbage human. You know, just a little global intrigue mixed with forbidden romance.

Now, Skarsgård is playing Brandt, the top dog at this sketchy empire—the CEO, kingpin, boss of bosses, take your pick. It’s not spelled out if he’s a straight-up villain or one of those complicated, possibly tragic elders Skarsgård was born to play, but safe bet: expect some cold stares and gravitas.

Behind (And In Front Of) The Camera: Family Ties Everywhere

  • Dakota Fanning: Starring as the undercover agent.
  • Elle Fanning: Also acting, and executive producing beside Dakota (yes, double-duty for both Fannings).
  • Stellan Skarsgård: Playing Brandt, the mysterious corporate boss; also recently seen in Dune and Andor.
  • Alex Cary: Series creator, showrunner, and executive producer (his production company FLW is under Sony).
  • Kari Skogland: Directing and executive producing (notable for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier).
  • Julie Gardner: Executive producing for Bad Wolf America.
  • Brittany Kahan Ward: Executive producing for Lewellen Pictures.

Worth pointing out: This isn’t the first time a Skarsgård and a Fanning have crossed paths. Stellan just starred with Elle Fanning in Sentimental Value—where he played an aging film director/father, which snagged him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe. (The film, by the way, cleaned up at Cannes and took home Best International Feature at the Oscars. Not bad.)

Production Details (And A Few Industry Nuggets)

Alex Cary’s running the show through Sony Pictures Television—his deal covers both development and executive producing, in case you track that kind of behind-the-scenes power brokering. Skarsgård is signed with CAA and Curtis Brown Group if you’re wondering how these talent deals get done.

'At its core, this is one of those stories where the spy can’t decide if she should take down the villain or just fall for him instead.'

Not sure when we’ll actually get to see this on Apple TV+ (they love their slow rollout), but with this cast and premise, you can pretty much guarantee the streamer’s going to hype the living daylights out of it.

Will we get icy boardroom showdowns, star-crossed lovers, and some classic Skarsgård monologues? Almost definitely. Stay tuned.
