Oops: DCU fans reckon James Gunn accidentally spoiled 'Man of Tomorrow' for Superman's new movie
James Gunn may have let a Man of Tomorrow spoiler slip while clarifying a DCU project’s continuity — and fans think it hints who makes it out alive.
So, James Gunn has been at it again, stirring up speculation in the DCU camp — this time with what appears to be a bit of an accidental spoiler for the next Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow. All he had to do was clear up some timeline confusion, and suddenly everyone’s dissecting which of our heroes is going to make it to the end credits alive. Typical DC fandom, really.
The Grodd Show Shuffle
The whole fuss started with The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a DCU mockumentary that, according to Gunn, will hop across time via interviews and “archive” footage. The kicker is this: although the show jumps around, its actual place in the DCU continuity comes after Man of Tomorrow. And since Jimmy Olsen is front and centre in the Grodd project, fans have jumped to the pretty logical conclusion that he survives the next Superman film — unless we’re in for some posthumous documentary business, which would be uncharacteristically grim for the Daily Planet’s goofiest snapper.
‘Well, no. I mean it’s a true crime series so it jumps all over the place. But overall in continuity, it’s after MoT (and won’t come out until then).’
That’s Gunn himself, spelling things out after actor Skyler Gisondo (who plays Jimmy in the DCU) told Screen Rant he’d figured The People v. Gorilla Grodd happened between the first Superman film and Man of Tomorrow. Gunn set the record straight on Threads and only ended up throwing more fuel on the fan theory bonfire in the process. Nicely done.
Who’s Back, Who’s Out
If you’re trying to piece together your own theory on who lives and who dies, here’s the slate for Man of Tomorrow: Lex Luthor is apparently teaming up with Superman to deal with Brainiac (there’s a pairing), and a bunch of heroes return from the previous Superman outing. That includes Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner (in Green Lantern mode), Hawkgirl, and Supergirl. Strangely, Metamorpho is nowhere to be seen this time, despite being the latest inductee to the so-called Justice Gang. Instead, you’ll get new Green Lantern John Stewart and Blue Beetle crossing paths with Superman — a bit of a crossover fest, if you ask me.

With Brainiac apparently launching a full-scale attack on Earth, Gunn’s timeline reveal suggests Jimmy Olsen (and potentially others wary fans are keeping their eye on) actually gets through it all. Of course, that still leaves the door open for other casualties among DCU’s increasingly crowded team line-up. All in all, Gunn’s well-meaning clarification did what DC news does best — make everyone even more paranoid about who’s making it out alive.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ will see all this carnage play out — but fans already believe Gunn spoiled which characters are safe.
