South Park changes the show's title for Season 29 to troll Donald Trump
South Park will go by a new title in Season 29, with Matt Stone and Trey Parker confirming the change is a dig at Donald Trump.
Right, if you thought South Park had run out of tricks, think again. The show is back in the headlines — this time not for a tasteless gag or a celebrity roasting, but for actually changing its name. And yes, you guessed it, the reason is as daft as anything the creators have done before.
South Park Season 29 premieres on 16 September 2026 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central.
A Proper Name Swap
Series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have announced that, starting with the upcoming Season 29, the Emmy-winning comedy will officially ditch the name South Park — at least for now — and rebrand itself as South America. Yes, you read that correctly. According to them, the rename is a direct parody taking aim at what’s been going on in American politics, specifically with President Donald Trump and his, let’s say, creative approach to geographic names.
The showrunners gave their reasoning in classic style. Here’s how Stone and Parker put it, quoted in a statement reported by Variety:
“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of ‘South Park’ to ‘South America.’ We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
What’s Behind the Gag?
The inspiration is all thanks to Trump’s recent trend of refashioning locations into “America” versions. Apparently, the 80-year-old President has made a habit of slapping “America” onto various geographical names. Most recently, Trump’s administration announced their intent to rebrand Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” all supposedly tied up with a US-Canada trade row. And it’s not the first time: he’s previously tried to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America”—so much so that Google and Apple briefly updated their maps accordingly, just to keep up. Trump’s even suggested in a video that New Mexico could be for the chop next, possibly becoming “New America.”
So, Stone and Parker are doing what they do best: poking the bear with a rebrand that’s pure satire. To go along with this, they’ve whipped up fresh artwork, swapping out “Park” for “America” in the classic show logo, just in case you thought they might not commit to the bit.
Same Show, New Name
The South America (forgive me — South Park) crew aren’t exactly new to trolling whoever’s in power. Their dig at Trump has already scooped up Creative Arts Emmy awards, so there’s precedent. Either way, the name gag will be front and centre when the new season drops in September — and you can count on the opening credits looking different for the first time in decades.
