Christopher Nolan and George Lucas were photographed together — and Star Wars fans immediately started demanding a Nolan film

It’s not every day you get Hollywood icons like Christopher Nolan and George Lucas in the same room, let alone at the grand opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. Predictably, Star Wars fans absolutely lost the plot the moment photos of the pair together started doing the rounds. Not that anyone’s got secret recordings of what they actually said to one another—apparently the event was a fort knox for private gallery chats and the swanky restaurant on the top floor.

The museum’s opening pulled in over 300 press and just as many A-listers, making it a bit of a circus, even by LA standards.

Nolan + Star Wars: What If?

Within minutes, fans online dove headfirst into a frenzy of speculation: what if Nolan directed a Star Wars film? It’s not just idle chatter—Nolan’s gone on record before about his practically religious devotion to Star Wars as a kid, so the thought’s not completely mad. X (that’s Twitter, if you’re normal) was crawling with wishful thinking. To sample the mood:

• @Lord_Lad7 basically begged the universe for Nolan to get the keys to the Millennium Falcon.
• @robesfuckingpi — possibly the day’s most ambitious — said a 'Dawn of the Jedi' trilogy by Nolan would be, in his words, “amazing.”
• @lonelyknight_23 declared, “We hoping Nolan become Director of Star Wars.”
• @PrimalAmnesia82 proposed, “George conceived, and Nolan directed Star Wars would be incredible.”
• @Jfignation took it further: “Nolan needs to revive Star Wars.”

Again, none of this is rooted in actual news. Nolan’s people and Lucasfilm haven’t so much as wiggled an eyebrow toward making it happen. It’s all just daydream fodder for now.

The Nolan–Lucas Connection

If there was ever a director wired into Star Wars’ influence, it’s Nolan. Just last month he was chatting with Park Chan-wook—yes, the Oldboy director/critic—about his cinematic upbringing, where he pulled no punches admitting Star Wars basically rewrote his brain chemistry.

Here’s Nolan spelling it out for Park:

“One of my earliest movie experiences (a very profound one) was seeing George Lucas’s first Star Wars… It came out of nowhere and completely rewired my brain in terms of what was possible in cinema.”

Nolan’s not been shy about his obsession, either. He’s mentioned watching the original 1977 Star Wars at least a dozen times in the cinema as a kid. That’s not casual. That’s commitment. Yes, Star Wars gets pride of place at Lucas’s new museum, too—the debut exhibit, ‘Star Wars in Motion,’ is overflowing with props and models, all from Lucas’s run of the first six films. So, between the setting, the guests, and Nolan’s well-documented love for the galaxy far, far away, it’s no wonder fans are desperate to see him on the director’s chair for the next big Star Wars thing, however unlikely it might be at this stage.
