New update hints when Wonder Man Season 2 hits Disney+
Asked in an interview, director Destin Daniel Cretton hinted when Wonder Man Season 2 could start shooting, nudging its release sooner than you might think.
Right, for those keeping tabs on the MCU's new oddball corner, let's talk about Wonder Man and why a second season might be arriving sooner than expected. There's just been a bit of a wink from the director about when they might actually start putting this thing together — and for a change, it's not the usual Marvel radio silence.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton dropped a quick update in a chat with Collider. When pressed on whether Wonder Man season 2 could start shooting before the year's out, he didn't say no — in Marvel world, that's bordering on a full green light.
His actual words: "I hope so. We'll leave it at that."
Considering how guarded they usually are, that's as good a hint as you're likely to get.
Marvel decided to give this show a second run back in March, right after it got a rare bit of critical applause. Cretton shares co-creator credit with Andrew Guest (who also acts as showrunner), and instead of the usual city-destroying chaos, this series follows Simon Williams (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) trying to make it in Hollywood — as a bloke with superpowers, but mainly focused on landing an acting gig. There are, bizarrely, fewer superhero punch-ups and a lot more industry struggles.
What Actually Happened in Season 1
So, about that finale: the story left Simon shadowing a security guard at the Department of Damage Control. Naturally, that led to him sneaking out Trevor Slattery (yes, Ben Kingsley's back) from prison, because apparently Simon's career isn't quite messy enough. This all unravels right after the in-universe film starring Simon premieres, meaning he basically trashes his own shot at stardom to save his mate. Strangest bromance Marvel's done in a while.
Oh, and for anyone counting awards, Abdul-Mateen picked up the MCU's first acting Emmy nomination since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier — a proper milestone.
When's Season 2 Coming?
If the production genuinely gears up before we hit 2027, it could hit screens as early as late 2027, though a post-Secret Wars release sometime in 2028 seems a bit more realistic based on the usual Marvel turnaround. Admittedly, it's still not quite Daredevil: Born Again speed, but Marvel fans probably aren't fussed — it's rare enough getting second seasons these days. At this rate, Wonder Man would join only Loki and Daredevil: Born Again as live-action MCU series to pull it off.
Cretton's Other Gigs
Just to add another curveball, Cretton's not exactly short of projects. He's currently piecing together a live-action Naruto for Netflix (yes, seriously, that's moving ahead), and there's also his return to Marvel with Spider-Man: Brand New Day — that's set for 31 July, starring Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Mark Ruffalo.
