Netflix's Minecraft series is not dead, and it took one fan question to prove it
After months of silence, Netflix’s Minecraft animated series just got a reassuring update — good news if you’d feared it had been quietly cancelled.
Right, so if you've been keeping half an eye on Netflix's planned Minecraft animated series and wondering if it was quietly ditched, turns out it's very much still alive. There hasn't been much news out in the wild since the last Annecy Animation Festival, which, if you're counting, was quite a while ago now. But the project surfaces again thanks to some direct fan prodding.
Jens Bergensten, Chief Creative Officer at Mojang Studios, cleared it up in a reply to a fan who asked whether the Netflix series was still in progress, saying: "Yes, we are still working on it!"
If you're unfamiliar, Bergensten is basically one of the top brass at Mojang, which means the "still working on it" probably carries as much weight as you'll get until someone at Netflix is ready to drop a trailer.
Where the Project Stands
Rumours had started swirling that the thing had been quietly put to bed, not helped by the fact that Netflix themselves decided to skip any Minecraft update at the 2026 Annecy Animation Festival. Fans were right to ask if something was up. But behind the scenes, production is apparently chugging along. Netflix confirmed to What's on Netflix that the show is still in the works—there's just nothing concrete to share on when you'll actually see it.
The last substantial info drop for the Minecraft series was at Annecy 2025, when Netflix showed off early footage and brought out the creative leads.
To date, there's still no official premiere date—not even the traditional "coming soon" window. What's on Netflix reckons 2027 at the earliest, and, more realistically, 2028 if production keeps trudging the way these big CG projects tend to go.
Who's Actually Making This?
The whole thing was first announced in 2024 during Minecraft's big 15th anniversary bash. Netflix and Mojang Studios promised an original story, entirely new cast, and—this is key—no straight adaptation of any game storyline. It's a 30-minute CG-animated action-adventure comedy, and here's the creative lineup:
- Flying Bark (originally revealed as the primary animation studio) and WildBrain (also now involved) are handling the animation.
- Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander are steering the ship as showrunners and executive producers.
- A.C. Bradley is in as head writer.
Netflix rolled out the team and some rough footage at Annecy in June 2025, but everything since then has gone quiet. That, paired with the lack of any new updates at Annecy 2026, kicked off another round of "is it dead" questions from Minecraft and animation fans alike. Bergensten's comment on Bluesky is at least something to hang onto until more turns up.
When's It Coming Out (& What Else Is On The Way)?
If you're desperate for more Minecraft on your telly and 207 episodes of Stampy just won't cut it, you'll have to wait a bit longer for anything official on this Netflix project. At this stage, the animated series could actually wind up coming out after the next Minecraft film. A Minecraft Movie Squared—the live-action sequel—started filming in New Zealand back in May 2026 and is locked for cinemas on 23 July 2027.
