Netflix cancelled this drama, changed its mind, and now it is No. 2 in America

There’s cancel culture, and then there’s Netflix cancel culture—which is its own beast entirely. This past summer, the streamer announced it was axing a laundry list of shows (so long, Building the Band and The Abandons), as if we needed another reason to expect disappointment from a quiet corner of our watchlist. Yet somehow, one series has managed to grab the spotlight not just once but twice this year: first, by getting Netflix to actually change its mind about cancelling it, and now, by absolutely battering the charts off the back of its latest season.

The comeback kid in question is Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black. The show’s third season, a solid eight-episode drop, landed on 27 August—and frankly, it’s already making the executives look rather clever for calling off its execution.

The Reversal That Paid Off

Let’s rewind a bit. Last December, Netflix announced that Season 3 would be the final act for the Bellarie family saga. For about seven months, everyone involved stuck to that funeral script. Then, almost out of nowhere and before they’d even given a premiere date, Netflix changed its mind: on 23 July Perry broke the news in a video, flanked by Taylor Polidore Williams (who plays Kimmie) and Crystle Stewart (Mallory), confirming a fourth season was on the cards.

Perry spelled it out for Netflix’s Tudum outlet:

If you’re one of the handful who hasn’t followed along, here’s the cheat sheet: Williams stars as Kimmie, a onetime Chicago club dancer who elbowed her way up to COO of the Bellarie clan’s hair care empire. It’s soapy, pulpy, and leans into all the melodrama you’d expect. By the close of Season 2, Kimmie had teamed up with Mallory (Stewart’s scene-stealer) to hand over enough dirt that the FBI could put large chunks of the family behind bars. ‘The hardest part of being powerful isn’t gaining the power, it’s keeping it,’ as Williams put it during the pre-release run, and she’s been selling this season as the most intense yet for Kimmie.

Binge-Ready and Breaking Records

This instalment shakes things up—gone is the split-batch release formula of the first two runs. Instead, all eight episodes arrived at once, perfect for a binge, which probably helped rocket it up Netflix’s US TV chart to the No. 2 slot, second only to Death of the Pastor’s Wife. And internationally, it’s gone even harder: No. 1 in Brazil, Belgium, Bolivia, and the Bahamas, with top-three positions stacking up in Argentina, Australia, Austria, and Bahrain. That’s not the record for Netflix, but it’s the sort of spread streamers would kill for with a US-made soap.

Network TV mostly waved goodbye to this kind of primetime potboiler after the Empire and Scandal era wound down. Perry’s been the exception, holding down the fort for this audience on two fronts: catering to the BET+ crowd with his Sistas universe and packing in Netflix viewers with Beauty in Black. It helps that his thriller Straw (2025) quietly became one of Netflix’s most-watched films last year, further cementing the love-in between the platform and Perry’s prolific output.

What’s Next for the Bellaries?

There’s no date yet for Season 4. Still, given how smoothly this year’s U-turn played out, nobody’s expecting a long delay. And in classic soap fashion, the Season 3 finale leaves no shortage of cliffhangers to tee up the next act. Expect Williams and Stewart to return, along with Ricco Ross, Debbi Morgan, Richard Lawson, Amber Reign Smith, and Xavier Smalls back for more.
