Netflix has cancelled Ransom Canyon, six weeks after a finale that already ended the story
Netflix has axed a Texas-set romantic drama after two seasons, making the call about six weeks after its second run landed.
If you blinked, you might have missed it: Ransom Canyon is done after just two series on Netflix. That Texas-set romantic drama – you know, the one with Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly pining away – quietly got the axe about six weeks after its second series dropped in late July.
Ransom Canyon ran for a total of 18 episodes.
Netflix didn't exactly rush to renew the show after its first series, either. Series 1 pulled OK numbers but took the streamer more than two months to greenlight a follow-up. Even then, the order shrank from ten to eight episodes, and most of the supporting roles got swapped around – classic 'creative reset' territory. For anyone keeping score, that’s usually not a ringing endorsement.
Why Netflix Cut It Loose
Series 2 apparently sorted itself out, creatively speaking, but the viewers didn’t stick around to notice. The opening week brought in 4.1 million views – which sounds decent until you realise it’s a whopping 43% drop from the 7.2 million who tuned in for the start of 2025. After flirting with the Top 10 once more, it faded off the charts entirely a week earlier than series one managed. Not a promising sign if you're in the renewal game.
To be fair, Netflix has let worse-performing series stumble into a third round before now. The likes of Running Point lost the same 43%, The Four Seasons vanished by 63%, The Gentlemen dropped 45%, Avatar: The Last Airbender was off by 59%, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder somehow survived a colossal 76% nosedive. Yet Ransom Canyon had big star salaries and those wide-open Texan landscapes don’t come cheap, so the viewership slide sealed its fate.
The Plot, The Ending, The Bittersweet Goodbye
For anyone who stuck with it, the story has always circled Staten Kirkland (Duhamel) and Quinn O’Grady (Kelly) – childhood best mates who could never sync their timings. Series 2 played the old engagement-to-someone-else card with Quinn, but by the end, she and Staten had finally sorted themselves out. No wild last-minute cliffhangers, no 'who got shot in the saloon?' business. Just old-fashioned closure, whether you liked it or not.
