If you thought 2026 couldn’t get any stranger for video game movies, think again. We’ve already seen Return to Silent Hill and Super Mario Bros. Galaxy blast their way onto screens, and now Mortal Kombat II has barged in—trying hard to redeem itself after the rather iffy 2021 reboot. Warners launched the sequel in cinemas back in May; now it’s out on VOD, and there’s a 4K Blu-ray coming 28 July. So, it’s getting a full push—and you get the sense Warner Bros. isn’t quite done milking fatalities just yet.
Now, we managed to corner director Simon McQuoid for a chat about this latest home release. There’s one question everyone’s asking: is Mortal Kombat 3 on the cards?
McQuoid Talks the Future—But Keeps Cards Close to His Chest
You might be hoping for a big announcement, but don’t hold your breath. When pressed on the possibility of a third chapter, McQuoid didn’t exactly spill the beans. Here’s what he had to say:
'I think the lifecycle of this film needs to totally play out before anything could be stated officially. So I would say, wait and see.'
Not confirmation. Not denial. Just classic Hollywood: let’s see if the tills keep ringing before anyone signs up for another one. Makes sense, really—these days, home entertainment numbers are worth about as much as the theatrical haul, if not more.
More Than Just the Films: Hints About the Next Game
We didn’t restrict ourselves to movie chat. McQuoid clearly loves the source material—he’s been a Mortal Kombat player since the '92 coin-op days—and offered a few personal picks for favourite characters and games. But what actually raised eyebrows was when he started dropping hints about what’s coming from the games side. For anyone following the franchise, there’s been loads of speculation that NetherRealm is prepping Mortal Kombat 13.
'From the little bits that Ed's told me of what's coming up, it's very exciting what they've got. I can't divulge anything—that would be wrong of me—but what they're cooking up is pretty exciting. I think the next thing they do is going to be quite exciting.'
Not exactly spoilers, but you don’t have to squint to read between the lines: big stuff is brewing, and the bloke’s obviously itching to talk about it. This is the kind of barely-veiled tease fans love, and if you’re even remotely into Mortal Kombat, you’ll want to keep an eye on future announcements.
Mortal Kombat II: How Does It Stack Up?

- Ramps up the bloody spectacle and fan service without falling completely to bits story-wise (high praise, for a Mortal Kombat movie).
- Director staying cagey on sequels, but energies are clearly focused on home release and seeing how the numbers pan out.
- The game franchise looks set for a new chapter, with McQuoid hyping up whatever NetherRealm’s planning next.
If the franchise does keep going, at least we know this latest film has managed to hit the mark with a lot more fans than last time. Bleeding, screaming, and arguably having a lot more fun than the last round.
