But this isn’t just some Reeves vehicle; Aziz Ansari not only wrote it but also made his feature directorial debut here, and also stars as the luckless Arj, who’s stuck living in his car and running chores for the rich to survive. Seth Rogen’s on board as Jeff, the wealthy if slightly clueless boss, with Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh rounding out the supporting cast.

The Box Office Flop

Good Fortune launched in cinemas on 17 October 2025, but despite all that talent, audiences simply didn’t show up—in one of those classic ‘are we surprised?’ Hollywood moments. The worldwide box office haul was just $26 million, against a hefty $30 million production bill.

Why Did It Flop?

This wasn’t Ansari’s first rodeo—even if it was technically his directorial debut. He only kicked off Good Fortune after Being Mortal got iced by Searchlight Pictures in 2022. He pivoted, hoping to make something original—citing the Barbie 2023 box office smash as proof that 'proper' comedy still had a shot in the multiplexes. Rogen, a mate of Ansari’s, shaped some story beats and stepped in after Being Mortal went sideways.

The actual plot? Gabriel (Reeves) gets involved after Arj hits bottom, desperately trying to prove that money isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. To make a point, Gabriel swaps Arj’s life with Jeff’s, expecting it all to blow up. The twist: Arj’s life actually does get much better overnight. Gabriel, meanwhile, finds he’s lost his kudos in Heaven, and the miracles he orchestrated start going a bit haywire. It’s half redemption story, half send-up of modern hustle culture, all laced with Ansari’s usual brand of low-key neurosis.

Critical response was warm enough, at least if you trust scores—79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 80% Popcornmeter—with most reviewers praising the cast chemistry and Ansari’s knack for awkward comedy. None of that helped with box office numbers, of course.

This entire saga does, if nothing else, show that just because a film flops in theatres doesn’t mean it’s doomed. It might just be waiting for its moment somewhere up the streaming charts.
