If you ever thought streaming platforms took a break, well, not this week on Paramount+. There's a decent mix on offer – spy action with Michael Fassbender, a surreal musical with Daniel Day-Lewis, some animated bulldozer madness, human-eating fish, and, naturally, more live sport than you could feasibly pretend to watch. Here's what's actually worth your time (and what you could, in all honesty, have on in the background).
Fassbender Returns to the Shadows: 'The Agency' Season 2
Michael Fassbender is back making it look easy as a globe-trotting spook in the second season of The Agency, landing Friday, 21 June. This time, his CIA character Martian has been shuffled over to MI6, which, in telly logic, means packing his bags for a Sudanese black site. He's not alone, either: Jodie Turner-Smith joins him as his partner Sami. Things escalate when Martian is dragged into a messy tangle of international espionage, where basically everyone’s looking over their shoulder for the next double-cross. The drama level? Predictably high – expect all your classic spy shenanigans, trust issues, paranoia, the lot. Fassbender being the lead is, let’s be honest, about 60% of the pitch.
Meanwhile, in Animated Land: 'Rubble & Crew' Season 3
For those with younger humans (or just a suspicious fondness for cartoon construction vehicles), Rubble & Crew returns for a third season on Monday, 17 June. The formula hasn’t changed: big, improbable building projects (think massive skyscrapers and turtle-shaped houses), a couple of recurring villainous rivals (Speed Meister and his brother Mega Meister), and a heap of energetic, largely consequence-free chaos. It’ll keep the kids busy. No harm done.
If You’d Rather Watch Daniel Day-Lewis Spiral: 'Nine'
On Tuesday, 18 June, it’s Nine – a musical number from the late 2000s based on the stage show. Daniel Day-Lewis stars (yes, singing at points) as Guido Contini, a supposedly brilliant Italian film director who’s completely lost his mojo and, it turns out, most of his ability to write anything at all. Chased by his wife, tormented by his mistress, and haunted by various women from his past, he absconds to a fancy spa to catastrophically fail at sorting his professional and personal lives. It’s extravagant, a bit self-indulgent, and has a genuinely absurd cast list if you’re into that sort of thing.
Classic Nonsense: 'Piranha' on 20 June
Slotted nicely for a Thursday night, 20 June, comes the cult classic Piranha – never accused of subtlety. The plot: someone makes a stupid mistake at Lake Victoria, and now a horde of ancient, angry piranhas is determined to shred their way through a lake full of spring break partygoers. It’s the sort of gory, daft, knowingly over-the-top horror comedy that’s best watched with a strong drink in hand.
