Michael Douglas just hit pause on retirement, reuniting with Oliver Stone for the director’s new film White Lies after stepping away from acting last year, Variety reports.

Well, here’s one for the books: After more than half a century in Hollywood and telling anyone who’d listen he was done with acting, Michael Douglas is actually stepping back onto a set. And not just any set—he’s teaming up with Oliver Stone again, which immediately makes things a bit more interesting for film nerds or anyone who’s watched Wall Street more than once.

Douglas Swears Off Acting… Then Changes His Mind

Last year, Douglas made it quite clear he wasn’t planning to pick up another script. His words were something like: "I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop. I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set." Fair enough, really. But when Oliver Stone calls, you apparently don’t say no—especially when it’s a director who previously directed you to Oscar glory.

White Lies: What We Know

The new film is titled White Lies, and it officially reunites Douglas with Stone for the first time since 2010’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. That was, of course, the follow-up to the original 1987 Wall Street—the film that snagged Douglas his Best Actor Oscar back in the day. This time, White Lies isn’t a finance thriller, though. Stone’s described it as a very personal film about people and relationships, which frankly could mean anything, but the reunion has piqued plenty of interest.

The Cast and the Production

  • Michael Douglas – finally broken his break, obviously
  • Homer Gere – you’re not misreading, that’s Richard Gere’s dad, still acting at 100, which is quietly astonishing
  • Ellen Barkin – if you’ve seen Animal Kingdom, Ocean's Thirteen, or Sea of Love, you know she isn’t someone you overlook in a cast
  • Willem Dafoe – because honestly, is it even a serious film if Willem Dafoe isn’t lurking somewhere in the credits?

Principal photography is wrapped, with shoots taking place across both Europe and Asia—a proper international affair. Stone went on record saying: "The cast was a delight from beginning to end. And the Italian crew was the warmest I ever worked with. I’m profoundly grateful for this opportunity." So, that gives you a sense he’s pretty chuffed with how things turned out.

Who Else Is Behind the Scenes?

Fernando Sulichin, Maximilien Arvelaiz, and Jordan Gertner are handling production. Tarak Ben Ammar, Gianluca Leurini, and Jose Luis Manzano have signed up as executive producers. Whatever keeps the wheels turning, I suppose.

Still No Release Date

At the moment, there’s no official release window for White Lies. Considering the cast and Stone’s track record, it’s one to keep an eye out for, whenever it actually ends up landing.
