Mel Gibson teases Resurrection of the Christ heading into different realms

After well over a decade of chatter, The Resurrection of the Christ — Mel Gibson's sequel to his 2004 biblical juggernaut — is actually in motion, and it's shaping up to be a far stranger beast than anyone expected. Remember all the relentless brutality and historical drama in The Passion? Well, brace yourself: Gibson is going full metaphysical this time, and the sheer scope sounds almost psychedelic.

If you thought he'd just stick with the Gospels, you haven't been paying attention to Gibson's love for a bold swing. According to him, the film doesn't even stay rooted in reality half the time. So yes, we're leaving dusty old Jerusalem behind for what he describes as different realms — creation, hell, and God knows where else.

Speaking to Christian Post, Gibson explained, 'You’re going to different realms, of course. I mean, you’ll be in the firmament before the creation. You’ll be in the Hell of the just, and then you’ll be in the Hell of the damned. And so it jumps around a little bit. It doesn’t just stay on the planet here. It gets around.'

A Biblical Sequel With a Twist

This isn't going to be just a Sunday School retelling because, as Gibson is quick to point out, the source material itself leaves plenty of gaps worth filling. He’s openly riffing off the idea that the Gospels are “synoptic” — as in, they line up but don’t exactly join up all the dots. Even John apparently admits the Gospels barely scratch the surface: there’s all sorts of apocryphal material and speculation about what Jesus might have said or done. Gibson clearly sees this narrative leeway as a licence to take the story into cosmic territory — literally venturing into hell, limbo, and the celestial unknown.

With all that otherworldly spectacle in mind, it’s no shock that the production budget is apparently a fair bit beefier than the original. Bringing all those burning lakes of sulphur and swirling heavens to life isn't cheap, especially if it’s supposed to look better than a mid-budget streaming series.

How to Actually Watch It

Before any of this madness arrives, they’re taking another run at the original. The Passion of the Christ is getting a fresh 4K release with Dolby Atmos, set for 10 September 2026. Apparently, if you want an early sneak peek at what’s coming in the sequel, you’d best clear your diary and get yourself to the cinema for that rerelease.

Looking at the sequel itself, there’s another sharp curve ball: Jim Caviezel is out as Jesus, with Jaakko Ohtonen stepping into the halo. Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, and Gabriele Rollo have all been cast in supporting roles, so if you’re playing the ‘spot the Italian actor’ game, you might get your fill. Gibson’s working on the screenplay alongside Randall Wallace (who wrote Braveheart), with production handled by Bruce Davey, Cedar Hill, and Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions.
