Matt Damon Says Ocean’s 14 Could Happen — But There’s One Big Catch
In a new interview, Matt Damon says momentum is building for a potential Ocean’s 14, though one key obstacle still needs sorting.
For anyone still holding out hope that the gang’s getting back together for another spin of the roulette wheel, there’s a bit of cautious optimism rolling in. Yes, Ocean's 14 is back in the headlines, and Matt Damon has popped up to offer an update that’s both cheery and — in classic Hollywood fashion — slightly frustrating.
Not Quite Showtime Yet
Damon, who’s just come off the back of his turn in The Odyssey, was chatting on the Rich Eisen Show when the inevitable question came up: are the wheels spinning on an Ocean’s Eleven reunion or is this just another one of those floating, never-gonna-happen sequels? According to Damon, the film is ‘very much in development’ and, perhaps surprisingly, all the big names are up for it.
But of course there’s a catch: everyone’s schedule is a mess. In Damon’s words, ‘Because it’s just everybody’s schedules. You got to get everything right and make— I mean, I think they’re probably close on that one.’ In other words, no one’s got more than five minutes free at the same time, which is apparently proving a real headache for the studio.
The crew is closer than ever to making Ocean’s 14 a reality.
If you’re thinking, 'Hang on, wasn’t there talk about this kicking off in October?' — you’re not losing it. George Clooney himself was out earlier in the year saying production was meant to start then. Well, Damon’s update pretty much puts a damper on any hopes of seeing filming before the year’s out.
A Familiar (And Star-Studded) Lineup
What about the plot? Clooney’s let slip that the new film’s going to borrow more than a little inspiration from Going in Style — the 1979 version, mind, not that limp remake with Michael Caine. Picture the old gang grappling with growing older, bank robber style. Feels on-brand, doesn’t it?
And, yes, expect all the usual suspects: Don Cheadle, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, and Damon himself. Soderbergh’s still steering the ship, so if they actually manage to get this off the ground, it ought to feel properly like an Ocean’s film rather than some desperate cash-in.
